Gabriel is splendid! And hmm, I guess he must have quite a lot of self-control. (I wonder how much self-control canon Gabriel actually has. Certainly my first reaction to this one's comment on Dean's inability to keep a thought unspoken was along pot-kettle lines, but this world is so small-townish, and he's staying so close to people who would kill him, his cover is so fragile by comparison.) And yes, I hope dogs can't sprain their eye muscles by rolling them too hard. Poor Sam! Though no doubt he'd say some appallingly naive and optimistic things about human-angel relations if he had the power of speech, so for Cas and Gabriel's sakes it may be just as well for now.
The Green Knight is a very effective giant dick. I love seeing how far back recognizable human behaviors go, like Job's comforters -- it's clear that Satan and God spared their families, because they're still everywhere today.
The Green Knight is the best troll ever. Especially to an impetuous bunch of idealistic boys.
HAH PWNED I can totally pick up my head and walk away with it, you guys honestly didn't see that coming? Because there is obviously nothing supernatural about me at all? See you in a year!
Gabriel's self-control is... debatable. Especially now. But that's no reason not to one-up Dean.
And... well. He left home to avoid becoming a murderer - just how important that is for angels becomes apparent later on - and, given for him the definition of 'person' now includes humans as well as angels... um. He might not have killed Dean, if Dean had let him out without saying that Castiel was in danger? But I wouldn't swear to it. Especially under provocation. Which Dean is... capable of.
A chapter that ended with a smile instead of "oh dear gods someone's about to die AAAAAAAHHHHH". IT'S SO WONDERFUL!!!! You were right, the snarking was great, especially with its perfect balance with dramatic Dean's-still-having-an-epiphany.
Also: Hooray languages! [I'm an ancient Greek nerd,so I appreciate your translation. Wheeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!]
I love English int he fourteenth century, when it was becoming more widely spoken and getting more of other languages mixed in but London English wasn't too dominant yet. It's so flexible - you can actually see the authors going 'oh, here are all these words, BUT I LIKE THIS ONE BETTER which I just made up / reinvented from alliterative poetry hundreds of years ago / adapted from French or Latin or Italian or borrowed from some other dialect, oh and also sure I can spell it this way here to rhyme/alliterate with THIS word, but then I'll spell it in this other way here, BECAUSE I CAN.' :)
Dean needs all the epiphany-distraction he can get. Yelling at Gabriel is so wonderfully calming!
Interesting about 'ye' and the other language stuff. Which is nothing to do with the story, but I like learning new stuff like that, so I thought I'd mention it first, since it was the last thing I'd read
( ... )
Balthazar is the main reason for the 'minor character death' warning. Technically he isn't a character at all, but he is far more important than John Winchester or Bill Harvelle, because really, do we care about them?
But it's okay! Because princess-aleeraand I sketched out an OT5 AU of this AU in which they all run away to sea with Balthazar and become PIRATES! On a SHIP named STEREK! For all your fix-it needs. *nods firmly*
But yes, Dean is going to become very confused when he has time to think, poor boy! And you're right, Dean absolutely makes his best decisions in the heat of the moment. He has a much harder time carrying on a more extended campaign, especially one that doesn't involve actual hitting things...
