So we all know music triggers memories. I blame my heightened senses for this phenomenon... smells do it too. We all have that one album we bought during a specific time in our life, and now every time a song from it pops back near our ears we can't help but be pulled back into time. I was just thinking about that today, and how much it happens to me. Four albums come quickly to my mind here today...
Steven Curtis Chapman, Declaration: So this one takes me WAY back to my sophmore year of high school. I bought it just before I left to go on a mission trip to Appalachia Kentucky. This was at the height of my Christian music phase, and I was CRAZY about SCC. He's still one my favorites, his ability in honest lyric writing putting him far and above the rest (Be Still and Know). It was the perfect soundtrack for the immense blessing I gained from that trip, and I just love burying myself in tracks like No Greater Love and This Day which take me right back. Back to the days where things were so uncomplicated and my spiritual life was being enriched.
James Horner, The Four Feathers soundtrack: So besides the fact that this will always be in my opinion one of Heath's strongest roles, the music was also gold. I took the album with me when our family took a road trip to Canada five years ago, and listened to it on repeat as I read A Voice in the Wind during the ride. It turned out to be an amazing companion to what is now one of my favorite books, and the time on the road flew by. This was back when me and my little sister still fought a lot, and being stuck in the back of my mom's car was less than fun. You could say the music/book was a nice distractor .
Adiemus, Songs of Sanctuary: This album I got from a friend right before I left for my Europe trip four years ago. It turned out to be the most amazing music to travel to, especially in Europe. Staring out the tour bus windows at the rolling hills of Ireland, the rugged foggy terrain of Wales and rainy London was surreal as this music just soared, matching my other worldliness wonder. Trying to listen to it now as I drive around Walla Walla just doesn't compare.
Coldplay, Viva la Vida: So not too long ago obviously. I picked this up on the day it came out naturally, obsessively listening to it as I was home for a week before summer school started. It always reminds me of my friend Julie, who I hung out with a lot during that week. Before the worries of online classes, and student teaching looming ever closer. Am I the only one who finds themselves listening through Lovers in Japan just to get to Reign of Love? The second song is just so calming.
So. Music continues to be my life.
I go home in 2 1/2 weeks! Every emotion has and will continue to cross my brain. These next five months are going to be a whirlwind.
the oh so near future,
musak!
