i guess they are both just being stupid, but also trying to hedge their bets. jake has no confidence in anything lasting because so far in his life, nothing has. and he's got a very tenuous hold on things as it is and if he changes anything, he might not be able to maintain if the new thing doesn't work out. he's got light at the end of the tunnel finally, for the first time in years, and his about-to-be-won independence and security isn't something he wants to gamble with.

as for heath, he's spent a lifetime avoiding relationships because they never felt right. now this feels right, but jake is all wrong - he's too young, he's a hooker, he's everything heath isn't. (small, easy-to-overlook point: while we know that jake's in school, heath doesn't. all he knows about is jake's weekend-at-the-bar job.)

so even though heath's finally realized he's in this over his head emotionally, his analytical brain is telling him that there's no chance it will work out and that he should save himself the hurt and trauma of a doomed relationship.

or at least that's what i'm getting out of it. who knows what they'll decide to do next. i think Heath is having some second thoughts about his second thoughs... we'll see. :)
