Reading

Looking back at the books I've recorded reading this year, I notice I'm in a bit of a rut. Or more accurately, I've almost exclusively read fiction. The vast majority of that is crime fiction, but that doesn't bother me as it is my favourite genre and it's useful for work to have a wide knowledge of a genre. According to my list I haven't read any non fiction, though I didn't keep track of cookery or food books and I have had a few of those from the library. I had a Nigella Lawson fit during the summer and read her books then. It seems a bit odd that I haven't read anything else that isn't fiction, but may well be true. There is usually some sort of history lying about that I dip in and out of, but I frequently don't read books like that all the way through. Often I just flick through a chapter or two and then return to the library. Biographies and autobiographies have never really had much of an attraction for me. There is a newish book about Thomas Hardy that I would like to read, and must track down after the weekend. I also have the memoirs of a lighthouse keeper on loan at the moment and must read soon. I love lighthouses and wish there were still manned lighthouses. That would be a job I would love, I think.
