Today has been a full day. Stephen and I bottled our Sweetwater 420 clone and got to work on our newest batch. Using a converted 5-gallon cooler with a false bottom, we mashed 5.25 lbs. of grain (mostly British 2-row, with a smattering of specialty grains - chocolate, kilned coffee, special B, black and crystal malts). Sparged and added malto-dextrin, light and amber DME. That wort tasted goooood! Like a sweet coffee-chocolate dessert drink, and black as night. Added Kent Goldings hops at 60, 30 and 5 minutes. Cooled the wort (about 3 gallons) in the sink with ice water. Then....
...broke the floating themometer. In the nicely cooled wort.
One frantic call to the homebrew store owner later, we strained the wort through our nylon hop bag and reboiled it, cooled it a second time, added water to 5 gallons in our bucket and pitched the yeast: WLP005, British Ale Yeast.
OG was 1.058 so hopefully we'll have a nice full porter at 5.5-6% ABV when fermentation finishes. We lost about a half-gallon from the straining process, but I think it'll still be a good brew when it is done. This beer already has a name: Broken Glass Porter.
