A) How do you know that the people who "suffered and died" aren't the lucky ones in a disaster? Once you're dead (and I like to give people the benefit of the doubt that they've gone to "heaven"), it's over. The people who are left are the ones who'll be facing all sort of waterborn diseases, finding themselves homeless in the middle of a disaster area, there will probably be famin 'cause all the fields and animals are gone too, along with whatever food people had stored away. The dead don't have to worry about that.

For a lot of people, the comfort of their faith is being able to say, "whatever happens, there's a higher purpose and a higher plan, and I know it to be a benevolent one, so while I may suffer in the process and others may suffer in the process, whatever happens is for the best."

B) There's a catholic superstition that if you bury a statue of Joseph (patron saint of carpenters) upside down in your yard, your house will sell faster. Be sure to unbury it when your house has sold and you're moving, though, or Bad Things (such as a carpenter ant infestation) are likely to happen.

I agree-- the killing of 100,000 people in a freak, once-every-couple-of-centuries act of nature just screams 'benevolence' and 'higher purpose'¡ It's super-comforting¡
