Shocking News

Dec 29, 2004 09:00

Julie shocked me with some unfortunate news this morning. Right before she walked out the door to go off to work (I am taking the week off, so I think she is jealous and knew that this news would upset me, so she told me so I would be less likely to enjoy my day- mean) she told me that Ellen Degeneres had a new girlfriend- Portio de Rossi. She knows that I really like Portia de Rossi (blonde who was on Ally McBeal, and now has a role on Arrested Development). First though, I have to say I am impressed for Ellen. Portia is really hot, so I don't blame Ellen at all. But, I didnt even know Portia was a lesbian. After I heard this I was hoping maybe she was bi. That would have been a big plus. Anyway, she might be bi, but if she is I didnt find any mention of it. I did find mention of a big breakup with her former girlfriend (step daughter of Ringo Starr or something like that). She is going to have this woman's initials removed from her ring finger. So anyway I am assuming she is a lesbian, which of course means it pretty unlikely I'd ever have a chance to sleep with her.

In other news, while looking for the facts on Portia (who is from Australia, which I didnt know- I wonder if she has an accent?), I decided I really like Scarlet Johannson (I probably spelled at least part of her name wrong). I decided this because she had a great quote about how silly some actors acceptance speeches are- this is what she said:

She said: "Some people can be so goofy, especially the ones that say, 'I'd like to thank our Lord Jesus up above!'

I'm like, 'For the love of God, keep your mouth shut. That's why the world is so f***ed up because God is focusing solely on your career.'"

I thought it was funny. And also a good point. I get irritated when I see people attribute their personal success to "God". I think its very arrogant to believe if you are an NFL quarterback and your team wins, its because God wanted it that way. Why would God give a fuck about who won a football game? or for that matter, who won an Oscar.

Its even worse when they interview survivors of disasters. I don't mind if you are the only person involved (like the women who was attacked by the mountain lion while bike riding) and you say God wanted you to survive and so you did. That doesnt bother me that much (although I think its a rather naive statement, and also not very logical- truth is if God is there, I don't think he's much concerned with the day to day living and dying that goes on. Or if he is concerned, he must not be able to do much about it. If he was concerned about it, and was able to do anything about it, there would be a lot less of it going on- everyone would live to an old age, and die a peaceful death). When I see people who survived a disaster that killed lots of other people, and they say its because they are a good christian, and god saved them, it just makes me cringe. How much arrogance must you have to believe that god thought you worthy of saving, but decided to let everyone else suffer and die? And how insulting is that statement to the families of everyone who didnt make it. Truth is, you probably survived when all the others didnt by random chance. Someone always wins the lottery.

Got a second realtor coming over today. And the third tomorrow. Then I have to chose one, which I think will be tough. But its exciting to think about buying a new house. Maybe I should ask them each about God's involvement in getting their houses sold quickly. It would be a real plus if he'd work on getting the thing sold. That seems as worthy of his attention as a high school football game.
