Our Valentine's Day Adventure

Because life is never dull for me and oneandonlymatt

Now that I have your attention.

Matt and I left for Asheville on Friday night. We got into town at about 10pm, just in time to watch Battlestar Galactica (he wanted to see it before he went to India).

The next morning we went to the Budget Rent-A-Truck place to get a 10 foot truck. Then we went to Lowe's of West Asheville to pick up the White Expanded polystyrene foam insulation to start our barn insulation project. White Expanded insulation is better than Pink Extruded for our purposes as bugs prefer to eat the pink stuff. We loaded up the Budget Truck and headed up to Mt. Matt. Just as we were pulling up to the land we said "We're making really great time." Those are, of course, famous last words. I had just thought it my head that we should just park on the gravel road and unload the foam. It wasn't very heavy. I didn't say it, though, and Matt is kind of stubborn, so he pulled off the gravel road to the approach to the barn. We realized in the mud that we weren't going to go any farther so we tried to back out. Well, a combination of bad tires and mud, as we tried to back out the truck just slid and next thing you knew it slid right into a ditch on the driver's side of the road. There was a brief moment of freaking out before we walked down to our neighbor's house to see if they knew who to call for a tow truck. Unfortunately they did not, but they were now intrigued by our predicament and decided to come see the truck in the ditch.

So we called a tow truck to come help us winch the truck out. And as we waited for them, our neighbors helped us unload the foam. We played with their dog, Hashbrown, for a while and showed them some of the things we've already built. They invited us over for wine one night when we are up; we said we would take them up on that perhaps in March.

They left when the towing guy got there. It took him a little while to get the truck out, but eventually it was back on the road. He left and we ate our lunch and then fixed the gravel road from the issues caused by the tow truck and our Budget truck. Then we were done. We headed back down the mountain to return the truck.

We didn't get any insulation done, but it was okay. It was good to get to know our neighbors a little better.

Once we unloaded the truck, we drove back into Asheville where we had hotel reservations at the Haywood Park hotel. For the longest time we didn't even know that hotel was there. It is tucked away right in downtown Asheville. It was absolutely beautiful! We relaxed for a bit and got cleaned up from our Mountain adventure. Then we went out for the evening.

We started at Thirsty Monk where we met some girls visiting from Manhattan. We recommended a couple places to them. They were going to Limone's for dinner. I suggested they go to Sante too.

Then we went to a restaurant called Table. The food was beyond fantastic. Oh, and I had flowers delivered to the table for Matt. He thought that was very sweet.

Then we ended the night at Sante.

On Sunday I woke up and I was kind of sick. Coughing and achy. Some sort of flu. As soon as we got home around 1:30 I went to sleep. I woke up around 3 when Matt was getting ready to leave for the airport. I watched some TV for a bit and then went back to bed at 5:30. I didn't wake up again until 6am this morning. I cancelled a dentist appointment and then went back to bed. I eventually made it into work for a little bit to start Payroll. My boss told me to go home around 10:30.

Matt called me earlier today. He is stuck in Paris for the night because he missed his connecting flight to Bangalore. The plane in Atlanta was delayed by 20 minutes and that was enough to make him miss his flight. He is staying at a hotel at the airport. He thought he might take a train into Paris for dinner, but he doesn't have a coat since he packed for India, not France. Now he'll only be in India for about a day before turning around and coming right back home.

asheville, valentine's day, mount matt, neighbors
