A Valentine's Day Story

This story dates back 14 years. I could have sworn that I have typed this out before, but I can't find it so I'll type it out again.

When I was a sophomore in college, I was living with apocalypso23 in the dorms. It was February and I had been single for most of my sophomore year. I had dated a couple of people but none of those worked out. I had known oneandonlymatt since I started college as we had the same circle of friends but when we met, we both had significant others. Now we were both single and I had developed a huge crush on him. I hadn't read the signs very well and apparently he was into me too. We had been spending some time together hanging out. But I was somewhat shy and afraid to ask him out.

At this same time, apocalypso23 was going through some stuff and she had an important decision to make and was having a hard time making it. So we made a deal with one another. If she did the thing she was supposed to do, I had to go ask Matt out and vice versa.

On February 13th, I got back to the room after class. apocalypso23 was sitting on the top bunk and she looked at me and simply said "I did it." And I said "Damn!" So I was committed, I had to do it.

The next day, of course, was Valentine's day. So I marched after class to the Computer Lab at the Library (where he worked) to ask him out. We chatted for a few minutes, but he was working so he had to go help someone. He said "Hold on, stay here, I'll be right back." I waited for him and when he came back I knew I had to ask him out then or never. I was absolutely terrified. And he said to me, "So, are you doing anything tonight?" I had to stop and think for a second because the last thing I expected was for him to ask ME out. I, of course, said no and we made a date.

We were poor college kids, so we went to the fanciest restaurant we could (which wasn't very fancy), a place called Carlos Murphy's. It was, in fact, an Irish themed Mexican restaurant. I miss it. Then we went to an arcade.

And, we have been together ever since.

love, valentine's day, matt
