Movie - historical - Jews in the Venice Ghetto (with an execution)
Here's one that's haunted me for ages - I caught bits of it on the Foreign (non-English-language) movie channel years ago. I only caught bits, but the end was pretty bad. As in nightmare fuel. And I can't remember if the rest of the movie was in English or not.
It's set around the 1600s in Venice. I think the Jewish people are being forced to convert, and one young lady in particular has the pressure being put on her to do so. People are executed by being taken out to the marshes, hands tied, and a rope around their necks attached to a large rock. The rock is then dropped over the side of the boat, pulling them over.
I know she claims at one point to be Christian, because the part at the end of the movie is her own execution, and just as they lift the rock to drop it, she starts chanting the Shema Yisrael ("Hear, oh Israel...") in Hebrew or Yiddish. It's cut off as she's pulled into the water.
The movie was probably only made in the last 20 years.
