I can't remember the name of the app I played all the time. It was about flightless birds (please don't suggest Angry Birds) that went up and down on hills. The way you got them to fly was aim down right at the valley to shoot them higher in the skies. The trick was getting fast enough to outrun some tornado or something coming up behind you.

I played one that was a dragon. Pretty much the same concept. Dragon, Fly! is the name of that one if you want to check it out. I'm sure others will know the bird one too. :)

I believe (sorry rereading old entries) you can get this app off the creators website, they had that game and a bunch of other games they'd made up on it for free downloads.
