Video games

This was is pretty vague but I'm trying to find out what game this was that I played as a kid. I'm guessing it was either late N64 or early PS1. It seemed to be a JRPG (or at least looked like it). It has something to do with music (as in, the player controlling notes) and I believe making music played a part in the battle system. I think there were enemies that looked like caterpillars and the map screen looked like a scroll. It's possible that these details covered a multiple games though I'm sure it was just one.

Anytime I google a game like this I get games that are way too recent.
