late 80s / early 90s US alternative weirdness

I am trying to find out the identity of a track that John Peel played on his Radio 1 show in the late 1980s / early 1990s.

It had a very slow, crawling tempo - and a woozy background of guitars and groaning (a little reminiscent of the band Bongwater). The lyrics were part-sung/part-spoken... but in a male sing-song American 'backwoods hick/redneck' accent oozing menace, creepiness, stupidity and alcohol. The words went something along the lines of "I love you, I want you, I need you, my darlin'" and ended with "will you be my wife... number... eight?" (I may have got the number slightly wrong - but, you get the point...).

I remember Peel wryly observing, after he had played it, "Who says romance is dead??!".

Can anyone help??? This track haunts me.

music, song, 1990s, 1980s
