Eerie Japanese video game

Okay, so I remember playing this video game demo over and over as a kid. I think it was for Sega Dreamcast, though it could have been PS1. The only Dreamcast game I can think of, that is similar to your description, is Shenmue. I can't recall any ps games like that, from those years.

No, definitely not Shenmue, but I can see why you'd think that. There probably was fighting at some point in it, but I only got to play the first part since it was a demo. I think it may have been Grandia II, but I'm still unsure. Thanks for the input!
