This may be from a short story, or just a snippet of a longer story, I'm not sure.

The character (a man) has a severe fear of flying.  In order to keep the plane in the air, he must grip the armrests and concentrate with all his brainpower - he is the sole force, he thinks, that keep the plane aloft.  The flight is turbulant, exhausting.  He has never put this much effort into keeping a flight aloft.  The plane lands, safely.  The man dies.
