apartheid movie where a redhead dies?

I was just thinking today about a movie we watched in my sixth- or seventh-grade social studies class back in the day (so, definitely pre-2000s, it existed by 1998/99). It was a movie that took place in South Africa during the time of apartheid. I don't really remember any of the details, actors, or the title... I've read through the Apartheid/South Africa keyword lists on IMDb and nothing's struck me as familiar. It was a serious movie, not funny or really made for kids, and might have even been rated PG-13 or higher because I think we had to have our parents sign a permission slip in order to watch the movie in class? I could be wrong about the rating though.

The one thing I do remember very vividly was that in one scene, a redheaded, teenaged white girl who was a friend of the main protagonist, or a sister or something like that, was beaten up or pushed down because she did something inappropriate (like make friends with/defend a black person?), and she got bloodied up and I think she ended up being killed. I think it was the turning point/climax of the movie. I remember it mostly because it really upset me when I was a sixth-grader and I used to have nightmares about the scene. I'm certain she was a redhead and certain about the blood, and maybe 90% sure she died, but I really don't remember anything else about the movie or the main character or anything.

Anyone know what I'm thinking of? Thanks so much yet again!
