Plot of recent show?
I feel like a total mo, because I must have seen this REALLY recently, and yet I can't remember anything about it beyond this:
Character A has an issue with their parent, I believe their father, who is facing a court case where he may go to prison? Or something? They need someone to vouch for them being a good person, and the only person who can do it is Character A, but they're so resentful that they refuse. Over a span of time Character A is sortof convinced by an outside party that the right thing to do would be to show up and vouch for their father in court, but by the time A arrives the case is over and the father has been sentenced - but it's all totally okay because the father is like, yo, I may learn something from this, this is what I need and A is like man, I learned I really love you and shit, and now I'm all teary.
I THINK the main character is a woman, but I'm not sure. This honestly could even have been a cartoon. But it was definitely on TV within the past 3 weeks or so, and I'm pretty sure it's a show and not a movie. Another spanner in the works: I watch a lot of PBS & international stuff, so it could be something British/Irish/Welsh [def. no subtitles].
