Crock Pot / Slow-Cooker Hot Dogs: Success!

Jun 22, 2010 19:29

So, today I tried making hot dogs in the crock pot. And it worked! 2 hours on HIGH and the dogs are plump, juicy, and just slightly browned. Not quite as blackened as you get from the grill, but WAY better than boiling them. Next time I may give 'em a little bit longer ( Read more... )

Technique:

Open package of hot dogs

Remove lid from slow cooker

Dump hot dogs into slow cooker

replace lid onto slow cooker

Set slow cooker to HIGH

Leave for 2 hours

So, that's it. No liquid, no nothin'. The dogs only brown where they touch the crock, so every 45 minutes or so I took off the lid and moved the dogs around with a tongs.

A different day I tried the same thing with a package of precooked bratwurst and it was great for them too-- and they actually browned better for some reason.

The hot dogs that I used were the Hebrew National beef dogs.

Regardless of browning I liked that they were hot and plump but not waterlogged.

I'm gonna have to try that Next time I do dogs.

Did they get that nice crispy snap to the skin that makes natural-casing dogs xtra yummy on the grill?

I think they *would*, if you didn't put too many in the crock at one time. I think that is probably why the bratwurst browned-- I only had four of them in the crock, and I just tilted the crock back and forth whenever I came through the kitchen so the brats would roll a little.
