“Kristen?”

“Rob? I’m in the kitchen, babe.”

Rob stumbled out of the art-laden hallways of Kristen’s house, carefully maneuvering his way around sleeping wolf-dogs and a particularly lazy cat. He could see Kristen moving around the spacious kitchen, pots and pans clattering as she moved it out of the way.

Kristen’s face lit up the moment Rob’s bare feet stepped inside the kitchen’s tiled floor.

“Hi, morning,” she met him halfway and smiled as she pulled his head down for their customary morning kiss. “Why are you up so early?”

“Morning,” Rob kissed the side of her head before plopping down on the breakfast bar, watching as Kristen went back to her side of the kitchen. “For a moment there, I didn’t know where I was when I woke up in your room.”

“Yeah, that happens,” Kristen murmured, leaning over the counter to look at him and placing a cup of coffee out. “Breakfast?”

“Sure.”

“Anything you want?”

He shrugged, sipping the steaming liquid carefully. “Whatever you have.”

“Right,” she laughed and placed a full plate of sausages, eggs and toast in front of him. “I hope you don’t complain, but you have to share that with me.”

Rob grinned, opening his arm out in invitation to stand beside him. “You’re bloody perfect,” he mumbled, kissing her cheek as he pulled her close. “Thanks.”

Kristen laughed, taking a bite from the toast with eggs Rob was holding up for her. “As much as I want to sit here, I’ve got a job to do,” she muttered, glancing at the half rolled piles of pie dough resting on the counter. “Maybe I’ll see you after all these stuff.”

“Hmm,” Rob glanced around, his lips twitching at the pie pans lining the counter. “Happy Thanksgiving.”

“Aww, you remembered!”

“It’s hard not to,” he said, nodding towards the messy counter. “Not when it looks like you’re baking 50 pies today.”

“Shut up! It’s not 50,” she muttered, her nose twitching in annoyance. “I’m only making eight. And one was going to be for you but now I’m thinking I won’t make it.”

“Aw, I was joking.”

Kristen smirked and stole the toast he was eating, much to his dismay.

“Kristen, we really need to get things moving and I still have to wake up your father to…” Jules rattled off as she bustled inside the kitchen, stopping short when she found her daughter and her boyfriend eating breakfast. “Oh. Good morning kids. Why are you up so early, Robert?”

Rob smiled at Jules. “Good morning. I uh… I was a bit disoriented when I woke up so I went looking for Kristen. Don’t think I could’ve gone back to sleep.”

“I never thought I’d see a man awake at 8 in the morning on Thanksgiving,” Jules mused, shaking her head. “At least, not in this house.”

“Should I go after breakfast? I don’t want to get in the way.”

Kristen rolled her eyes, patting his head. “Nah, you’re fine,” she said, nodding at him. “You can sit there and talk our ears off. You’re good company.”

“Or I can help,” he piped up, cocking his head. “As long as it’s something that won’t kill dinner.”

“Fine. Help me peel the apples later.”

Jules dropped the metal bowl she was holding and turned to look at the two. “What did you just…” She stuttered, pointing at Rob. “Did you just offer to help?”

“Um, yes? I can’t cook, but I’m not completely useless.” Jules stared at him pointedly and Kristen laughed, rolling the dough in front of her. “Um, I know how to set the table?” He added lamely and Kristen giggled even harder.

“Oh thank you for giving me a daughter that comes with a boyfriend willing to help out during Thanksgiving,” Jules muttered, raising her face up towards the heavens. “God knows my sons are lazy little cretins this time of the year.”

“Hmm,” Rob looked up at Kristen in confusion. “Did I say something wrong?”

“No. But you’re probably going to be basting the turkey the entire day today.”

“There you are.”

Rob looked up and smiled at Kristen as she made her way towards him, wrapping her arms around his shoulders from behind the wooden swing.

“What are you doing out here?”

Rob lifted the cigarette stick and the beer can he was holding, grinning back slyly at her.

“Just a little break,” he mumbled, shifting to make room when Kristen moved to sit sideways on his lap. He lifted an arm up and slipped it around her waist when she snuggled close, her arms wrapped comfortably around him. “Thank you for having me over for Thanksgiving.”

Kristen snorted, rolling her eyes at him. “What, did you think I’d ever leave you alone during the holiday weekend?”

“No. But still, thank you.”

“You’re welcome babe,” she said, smiling warmly at him. “I should thank you for spending it with me. Since you know, you don’t celebrate it and all.”

“Oh. But I’m just here for the turkey.”

“Ass,” Kristen laughed, hitting him on the stomach lightly. Rob grunted and she giggled again, rubbing soothing circles on his tummy. “Someone had too much turkey.”

“I think I ate too much,” Rob muttered, closing his eyes at Kristen’s soothing touch. “Don’t let me eat like that again. There’s a lot of weird things happening inside.”

“Ewww Rob, gross.”

He chuckled, stubbing his cigarette on the ashtray beside him before kissing the top of her head. “You should be used to it by now.”

“I am, dummy. But still, doesn’t change the fact that it’s gross.”

“You love it anyway,” Rob teased, his fingers stroking her side.

Kristen squirmed, leaning away from him. “Don’t you dare. I’ll seriously throw up all over you.”

He chuckled, pulling his hand away to rest on her knee. She smiled, pinching his nose adorably.

“What’s going on? You’ve been quiet the whole day.”

“Everything’s fine,” Rob assured, his thumb tracing random patterns on her jeans. “I didn’t realize I’ve been quiet today.”

“So,” she drawled, propping her head with one hand and brushing his hair with the other. “Mom was pretty impressed with you today.”

He snorted, a small grin fighting its way through his lips.

“You know, you’ve got mad mashing skills,” she quipped, grinning brightly at him. “And can opening skills. Oh, and you peel apples perfectly.”

“Was my girlfriend equally impressed? That was my way of sucking up to the parents, you know.”

“Okaaaaay. Then we’re all very impressed,” Kristen murmured back, kissing the line of his jaw lightly. Rob sighed contentedly as they sat together, the porch swing rocking slightly with the wind. “Rob?”

“Yeah?”

She pulled his head down towards her, pressing a soft kiss on the corner of his mouth. “Thank you… you’re pretty amazing, you know.”

Rob smiled softly. “You’re welcome. And you’re pretty amazing too.”
