Kristen blew a long stream of smoke from her lips, her elbows resting against the balcony of the hotel they were staying in. It was just a little after lunch in Sweden and they had the afternoon off for a bit before they had to head out for press duties. She stared out into the city’s pretty views before snuffing her cigarette out, a small sad smile crossing her lips.

She missed Rob. Somehow, press junkets were never going to be the same without him.

Pulling her phone out of her jeans, Kristen pressed a button to light up the screen, smiling at the image that greeted her. She’d been changing the picture almost every day (mostly out of boredom,) but they were always the same two people and every picture never failed to make her smile.

Kristen jumped in surprise when the balcony door opened and Ruth stepped out, smiling at her.

“Hey Kris,” Ruth greeted, smiling at the younger girl. “What are you doing out here?”

“Nothing really, I wanted a smoke,” she mumbled, turning back to her phone. It lit up again and Ruth hummed, leaning closer to her.

“Missing someone?”

“You have no fucking idea.”

Kristen stared at the picture again. It was taken during their trip to the Isle of Wight and they were walking along the wide expanse of land, the sun setting right in front of them. It was a picture of her and Rob in bright orange hues, her body wrapped around him while she playfully nibbled on his ear and he was making this silly goofy face Kristen couldn’t stop laughing at. He took the picture despite her protests but she really couldn’t find it in her to fault him. It wasn’t the best picture since phone cameras tended to suck but she was happy with it and it always made her smile. Rob always made her smile.

“You know, sometimes I forget you’ve only known each other for like… what, three years? Four?” Ruth started, staring at the younger girl. “Feels like it’s been longer.”

“Uh, three years,” Kristen mumbled as she watched the light from her phone die out. “We met late 2007.”

Ruth laughed, nudging her. “That’s right. Doesn’t seem so long ago, huh?”

Kristen shrugged, smiling lightly at her. It was true-it really hasn’t been that long since she and Rob had known each other but it felt like they’ve been in each other’s lives longer. Sometimes she thinks it’s the way they connect that makes it so beautiful, but sometimes she wonders if it’s really because they are meant to be.

“But you look so much happier now,” Ruth said, smiling brightly when Kristen’s phone started ringing in her hand, the young girl flushing. “Isn’t it too early for him to be calling?”

Kristen bit her lip, staring at Rob’s picture. “I uh, I don’t know,” she muttered, her finger pressing the answer button. Ruth shook her head, leaving her alone in the balcony. “Hi, baby.”

“Hi, baby,” Rob answered back and Kristen smiled, propping her chin up on the balcony rail. “What are you doing?”

“Nothing,” she murmured, her thumb playing with the gold band on her finger. “It’s a little after two here and they gave us the afternoon off. I’m just being lazy and… you know. Doing nothing. Ruth and I were talking before you called.”

He laughed. “Were you talking about me?”

Kristen rolled her eyes, flopping down on the floor. “Yeah, we were,” she admitted, laughing when Rob groaned. She could hear the sound of people over on his side of the line, making her wonder if he was already on set. “Where are you?”

“I’m on set,” Rob mumbled, sighing loudly. “It’s just after 5 in the morning love. I’d rather be in bed, but work calls.”

They were quiet for a moment, the only sound between them was their breathing. These quiet moments always happened whenever they were on the phone, the sound of just being there enough for them.

“The sun’s just about to rise,” he whispered quietly. “Wish you were here to see it though.”

Kristen smirked. “I’ve watched the sunrise with you before, Rob.”

“I know. But still, doesn’t mean I don’t want to see it again with you. It’s really beautiful.”

And with that, Kristen had to agree. Sunrise in Los Angeles was pretty beautiful if you had the chance to see it instead of sleeping in, and given the place Rob was at the moment, she was pretty sure the boy was having a grand old time. He was simple that way.

“You know I was just looking at a picture of us before you called? You know, that one last Christmas when we were in the Isle?”

Rob chuckled, the sound of fabric moving in the background. “Is that the one where I looked stupid? Why would you want to look at that?”

“You looked cute,” she mumbled bashfully, tugging on her hair. “But so not the fucking point. I just remembered about it since you mentioned the sunrise.”

“But we took that picture during sunset,” he answered in confusion. “Are we… talking about the sun in general?”

Kristen laughed, a loud, girlish laugh she didn’t think she’d ever do. “Yeah, something like that.”

“You’re confusing me,” Rob huffed playfully. “But if it makes you feel better, we can take another one of those silly looking pictures during sunrise and hopefully that’ll make you happy.”

“Aww, is romantic Rob coming out to play?”

“Maybe. Besides, he’s always there,” he answered coyly before sighing again. “I miss you, Kris.”

“Yeah, I miss you too baby,” Kristen murmured back, biting her lip. “Did I tell you what happened during the press conference yesterday?”

“Not that I remember. You were pretty out when I called you last night.”

“Oh,” she pursed her lips, her eyebrows scrunching in thought. “I forgot about that. I’m sorry.”

“It’s alright,” Rob said. “So, what happened?”

“It’s nothing exciting,” Kristen paused, peering over the balcony. “It’s more like, I don’t know… someone asked Taylor and I if we missed you…”

“What did you both say? I hope as fuck you both said you missed me.”

“Of course we did, crazy,” she laughed. “BUT, I may have slipped out that I missed you. I didn’t think the mic would pick it up, but it did. Whatever.”

“Aww, my baby misses me?” Rob cooed and Kristen smiled, imagining the smile on his face. “To be fair, I miss you a lot too. Although I don’t have a press conference to announce it to.”

“Funny, HA HA,” Kristen muttered sarcastically. “Oh, hey, you know what? We could probably do that picture thing during sunrise that you promised. Since I’ll be like, jetlagged and all that, I’d probably be up by the crack of dawn anyway.”

“You’d really wake up just to take that picture?” He laughed and she hummed in response. Alright then. Rob sighed and Kristen could hear him smile, the thought sending flutters to her stomach. It was endearing. “One more day baby.”

She sighed happily, leaning across the balcony and peering over at the sights. It was beautiful, but she couldn’t wait to get back to Rob.

“Yeah, one more day baby.”
