Giles pulled out onto Highway 1 with a smile. Willow was helping Buffy with something and he had decided he had enough of the apartment. So he grabbed Jenny without telling her where they were going.
He figured the highway that went along the coastline of sunny California might give her a clue however.
Transfixed by the passing scenery, Jenny was in silent awe as she looked over at him and studied him before her eyes fell back to the passenger window.
"What are you thinking?" Giles asked softly, heading to a beach that wasn't really crowded during the week. A nice rocky cove and sandy beach.
"I've never seen anything more lovely." Jenny smiled as she let the breeze fall over her a moment from the open window. "I think I could be quite happy living on the beach in a tent."
Giles chuckled. "Might change your mind when the air turns cold at night. You're beautiful, Jenny. Thank you for coming out."
Jenny grinned. "No, right now I'm starting to believe i'm perpetually hot." She smiled and turned around. "Thanks for inviting me and your biased."
"Yes, I am," Giles smiled. "Here we are." He pulled into a dirt parking lot and dashed around to open her passenger door. "How about some fish n chips at a little place near here when we've had our fill of sand and nature?"
Jenny slipped out of the car and smiled. "Sounds perfect."
Giles kissed her gently and took her hand. "Love you, gypsy."
Jenny gave his hand a squeeze and leaned in to kiss him back. "Love you too England."
Giles led her down the path to the sand and kicked off his shoes and socks. "It's so beautiful here. I miss England sometimes. Not the last visit of course, but home."
Jenny stopped to take off her sneakers, letting her toes knead into the sand with a smile as she looked up. "What's it like?"
"There's some nice beaches down south," Giles said. "The cliffs can be magnificent and the power spots. It's such an ancient land. You'd love it, I think. There's a spot where I took Willow. It's an ancient burrow mound."
Jenny scooped up her shoes and tied them together, swinging them from her fingertips as she moved nearer to the waves. "Course I'd love England, Gypsies migrate around the power spots over Europe." She dropped the shoes to get a tie for her hair and continued quite contented watching the water for a moment.
Giles watched the water as well. "The ocean can be so calm and warm here. I've always wanted to settle around Bath somewhere. Maybe half here half there. Sometimes I wonder if I'm needed here anymore. Buffy's out so much, I don't feel like a Watcher anymore."
"Couldn't you do that if you were to reestablish the council. Put it near that spot you took Willow to?" Jenny asked. "Your needed, Ryanne needs you, Buffy despite being out for so long couldn't exist properly without you." She bent over to grab a flat stone and ran her fingers over it before skipping it effortlessly. "You're symbiotic.. Watcher and Slayer."
"I used to think that," Giles sighed. "I'm thinking of telling her about what the Council did to me. Did you know Ryanne is afraid of Ripper?"
"You should." Jenny turned around. "Would help in rebuilding those ties if she knew how badly they hurt you." She moved away a little further and answered quietly. "From the night that you pushed her. You didn't mean to and I tried to get her to understand. But with all that she's gone through, she's still so skittish."
"She asked if Ripper would hurt her like her step father did," Giles said softly. "I wanted to crawl under something. I was never like that, even at my most dark times. If this... integration thing gets out of hand, you and Buffy don't take chances, alright?"
Jenny was unreadable for a moment as she nodded. "If it goes out of hand, what do you want us to do?"
"Hold me down and shake some sense into me?" he suggested with a shy smile. "Maybe I should reach out to some of the Watcher trainees that weren't caught in the explosion. We know there are a lot of Slayers out there."
"Well then you should hope that this integration is done while I can still see my feet." She teased gently and nodded. "Would there be records somewhere of potential trainees?"
"There were backup records in Scotland," Giles said thoughtfully. "I could get Willow to hack into the computers. Quentin Travers was actually entering the 20th century when he died."
Jenny gave a skeptical snort and muttered about wishing hers had been like this as she walked over to a log and sat down.
Giles followed and sat down. "Full moon in two weeks, we'll try again, Jenny."
"I meant MY Travers." She looked at him and said nothing as she kneaded her toes into the sand again, keeping her thoughts to herself for a moment.
Giles watched the waves and moved to sit on the sand, his back against the log. "Do you want us to try and send you back?"
Jenny looked at him and shrugged. "Doesnt matter, I mean there's no guarentees that I'd even get in the right place or even be alive at the end of it. Not to mention do I want to be there and pregnant. It's not like here. I'd be slaughtered in moments after I got home. Especially if their still alive and still holding grudges for my killing Faith."
Giles nodded. "I went a bit insane when Willow was gone. I know I'm not a substitute but I'm not him either."
Jenny sighed. "I shouldn't have done that spell, if he's like you and knows this. He's probably frantic."
"He'll struggle to stay alive, Jenny," Giles said firmly. "Don't give up hope, luv."
"Oh I haven't." She looked at him. "I have nothing but hope. That's all I have. Hope for him, hope for you and Willow, hope for my baby."
Giles looked up at her and stood up. He leaned over and kissed her gently. "As long as I have you and Willow, I'll get by this mental split. Ready for clam chowder or you wanna make out on the beach?"
Jenny smiled and looked up at him as he pulled away, lacing her fingers up into his hair at the nape of his neck. "Which would make you smile like this more?"
"Both," he admitted, kissing her again. "We need more time for everything, don't we? Training, research but also having fun."
She nodded, kissing him back. "You need to build up all your resources for whats ahead."
Giles frowned. "Not looking forward to that, I'll admit. Come on, lets walk. I refuse to stay in a down mood for more than a minute. Now, names for the little one?"
"Who would be." Jenny got up, leaving their shoes and walking with him. "Okay names... surprisingly I like Hope for a girl."
"Really, that's rather nice," Giles smiled. "Certainly not Muffy."
"I rather like traditional names, I dont know if its the Romany in me or if its just liking the idea of normality." Jenny smiled back. "However I cant think of a boy's name, do you like anything?"
"Hmmm I've always been drawn to traditional as well. David, Matthew, Merlin?" he teased.
Jenny broke out laughing. "Merlin Giles." She nodded. "Well that would work for a child of magic. But uh no. How does Matthew David grab you? Or wait.. is there anybody in your family that you felt close to that you want to honor?"
"My grandmother's name was Elizabeth. There was a Watcher a long time ago, died protecting his Slayer, his wife. He was named Eric," Giles said thoughtfully.
Jenny smiled. "So how does Elizabeth Hope Giles and if its a boy, Eric Matthew Giles grab you or would you rather keep those for any little ones that you and Willow have?"
"Sounds perfect," Giles smiled, kissing her gently. "Your eyes shine when you talk about the baby. Thank you for letting us be part of that."
Jenny couldn't help but smile again, kissing him back. "Very important little soul, easy to be excited because I to be honest didnt think I would get to be a mom and thank you both for being with me through this."
"Lets feed you and junior," Giles grinned. "Then I'm going to find Buffy and talk to her about this upcoming mind thing. Oh, Willow said that Dekkon dropped by yesterday. Seems our young hero has a struggle of his own that he's asked help with."
"Um, I guess now should be the time to tell you, it may not be just a junior. Our family has a history of twins." She took his hand and smiled. "Really?"
Giles stopped and blinked. "T-twins? I, uh, yes. Seems Dekkon is a werewolf."
She smiled. "This would be where I say I'm teasing but uh no. In my world, Kris's twin is a girl Magdelena." She nodded. "Then he's come to the right place unintentionally. Magic knows magic."
"I want Willow to check him out though," Giles said softly. "If this was Sunnydale, I'd believe a werewolf showing up out of the blue to save Lilah from a vicious attack by Ethan. LA, not so sure."
Jenny nodded. "I'd have to bow to your judgement here. Being new has disadvantages. But he seems harmless from the two times I saw him."
"Perhaps I'm just paranoid. I'll spend some time with him and see," Giles smiled. "Come on, fish n chips sounds about right."
