Recent cinema outings - Venus was very good. O'Toole was great, obviously, but I also loved Leslie Phillips as his friend, a very nicely judged performance. Highly recommended. Roz writes about it, much better than I could,
here.
The Fountain was, well, bad. Hugh Jackman was great (a far, far better performance than the material deserved), and this was enough to get me into the present day narrative. Unfortunately the conquistador story was wooden, with some fantastically atrocious dialogue. I did wonder if it was meant to be that bad, and that Rachel Weisz's character just couldn't write, but it didn't make it any more arresting to watch. The future flying tree segment was strange and dull, though the big shiny starscapes did look rather nice on the big screen. Towards the end, as the stories kind of came together I thought it was going to almost work, but then the ending parts were just bonkers. The fate of Hugh Jackman's conquistador on finally finding the tree of life was particularly WTF worthy. I'm sort of glad I saw it, but I'm also glad I was using my cinema card so it was free. Poor Z actually paid for it, but as she was laughing all the way home I guess she got some sort of money's worth out of it - and a few hours ogling Mr Jackman is never going to be time entirely wasted.
Went to see Cymbeline at the REP this weekend. Kneehigh's take on the story was broad, irreverant, and just piles of fun. I've not been to the theatre much in recent years, and this reminds me why I should try to go more often.
Gym going continues, and I am just about managing 3 times a week. That won't be the case this coming week while I am away, but I think the cold would lead to me skipping anyway. I did go and do a lighter than usual session yesterday afternoon, but I wasn't yet feeling full on grotty then. Had my 12 week review last week, and I have lost a stone since I started going. Apparently regular exercise, hardly any snacking and changing your regular lunch to salad (instead of cheese sarnies on white bread) is good for you. Its like magic ;) I need to lose more weight, but I am mostly really enjoying feeling fitter. That both of us are enjoying this as much as we are is still kind of surprising, but in a good way.
