He hits what he assumes is the volume. Seeing the screen is only important if he can't understand what they're saying. Till then, he can try and decipher the text.
It sounds rather like pig latin, only spoken by very large crustaceans.
The text might be English, though rather like English that's been poorly photocopied about ten times. A few words are almost legible: perishables. . . Mars. . . company. . . plasxcdf. . . virgin. . . Candyland
The sphinx is simply fascinated at the pixels changing.
"Oh." She leaps to the floor and pads over to take a seat next to him and peer with interest at the screen.
Other than the anchors (who, upon closer inspection, have limbs that are moving Wrong) and the fairly typical set, there's an inset graphic in one corner.
It switches from a shot of construction equipment to a closeup of something like a fleshy, tumorous mushroom.
The TV's interesting, too. He's wondering if he can change the channel without upsetting the creature on top of it.

The channel switches to an infomercial. Possibly. It's hard to tell through the static, but someone's shouting excitedly in universal infomercialese.
