He hasn't seen a sphinx before, let alone a wee one. Certainly not one reading a book.

The TV's interesting, too. He's wondering if he can change the channel without upsetting the creature on top of it.

"'I will tell you a story w- wa-hile we are wa... whiting,' said Frog."

Oh, person! Her head turns to see if he's going to do anything more interesting than the book.

"...have you seen the remote?"

Does talking count?

Talking definitely counts.

"I don't know what that is. I have seen many things. What does it look like?"

"Usually it's a small box or squashed cylinder with a great deal of buttons on one side."

On the off chance it is in between the couch cushions, he starts pulling them up.

She glances around the area.

"It is on top of the cabinet over there, next to the vase holding the blue flowers." Not that she is going to move toward it or anything. Hey, maybe he just wanted to see it.

Cabinet, cabinet, cabin- ah, there. He grabs the remote and does just look at it for a moment.

"Cheers," he says absently. He doesn't recognize the writing.

The buttons are familiar, though, and he hits one of the 'up' arrows.

...?

"I do not hear any cheers."

The channel switches to an infomercial. Possibly. It's hard to tell through the static, but someone's shouting excitedly in universal infomercialese.

"I changed the channel," Ryan explains, hitting the button again. Can he find a news station? Even if it's a foreign one?

Oh, the screen is changing!

She peers down from her perch to the flicking screen. (She is too close to actually make anything out. She is also blocking a quarter of the screen.)

Commercial, cartoon, comedy act, pornography, commercial-

A black and white image of silhouetted anchorpeople comes on, scrolling text at the bottom. Their speech is too quiet to be intelligible.

He hits what he assumes is the volume. Seeing the screen is only important if he can't understand what they're saying. Till then, he can try and decipher the text.

It sounds rather like pig latin, only spoken by very large crustaceans.

The text might be English, though rather like English that's been poorly photocopied about ten times. A few words are almost legible:
perishables. . . Mars. . . company. . . plasxcdf. . . virgin. . . Candyland

The sphinx is simply fascinated at the pixels changing.

Bollocks.

"You can see better from here," Ryan offers. If she moves, he can see the images, then, maybe recognize something.

"Oh." She leaps to the floor and pads over to take a seat next to him and peer with interest at the screen.

Other than the anchors (who, upon closer inspection, have limbs that are moving Wrong) and the fairly typical set, there's an inset graphic in one corner.

It switches from a shot of construction equipment to a closeup of something like a fleshy, tumorous mushroom.

"What is it for?"

"Normally? It conveys information or entertainment. Here, I think it's rather hard-pressed to do either." He scowls at the set.

And starts flipping again.

"I feel entertained," she informs, settling down to watch the flickering images.

"Is it meant to go by so quickly?"
