Game: Sunnydale OSI
Who: Wes and Laili
When: December 23, 1997
Where: Wyndam-Pryce Family Home, England
Wesley had been floating on a cloud for the length of the vacation so far. Him and Laili had been having an excellent time together, exploring the sights of London together. However, once he arrived at his parent's home, he had come crashing down, although not in the way that he expected. Instead of merely dealing with his father's subtle putdowns, which he had assumed he could deal with this year with the help of Laili, he had received a letter that had been waiting for him that told him that his former girlfriend from his teenage years, Leanna Balfour, and that he had been awarded custody of their teenage daughter, Kristianna.
Wesley managed to disguise the shock when he first read the letter, quickly folding it up and placing it in his pocket. Later, while he and Laili where unpacking, he sat down on the bed and said, "I have something to tell you, Laili, and I'm not sure where to begin." He didn't mean to sound ominous, but he didn't really have a clue where to start in explaining that he suddenly had a daughter.
Laili sat down, blinking a bit. She'd read about things like this in women's magazines. It all made sense now.. the vacation... the wanting her to meet his family... the serious look on his face, the not knowing where to begin.
Wesley was going to ask her to marry him!
"Of course, dear." She smiled.
Wesley obviously didn't have a clue as to what she was thinking. If only it was such a joyous occasion.
After a second, he began. "My closest friend growing up was a girl named Leanna Balfour. She and her family treated me as if I were a normal person, not someone who was destined to keep on the family tradition. We even dated for a little while before my father sent me off to the Academy. He didn't approve of me being involved with someone so young. Today, I got a letter saying that she died..."
He trailed off for a second, not sure how to say the next part.
"...that's not what I thought you were going to say," Laili said, putting happy thoughts out of her mind.
"I'm very sorry that your friend died," she said, and gave Wes a tender hug.
He let her hold him for a moment. "The letter also said...it says that I have a daughter." His face was blank of expression, almost looking like he was in shock.
"You...."
Laili felt stunned by the news. She hadn't even thought that he would have had relations with a girl at such a young age - she'd always thought he'd been the shy type.
"My goodness."
He had been the shy type growing up. It had been something that happened once, but, as everyone learned in sex-ed, once is all it takes.
"Yes, it was a surprise to me as well," he said. "If I had known about this, I swear I would have told you, but no one thought that it was appropriate to inform me until...I suppose now." He sounded a little bitter when he said that. He wished that someone had had the foresight to at least inform him of Kristianna's existence.
"Her mother left her in my care," Wesley said. "Me, who's never met her in her life, as opposed to her grandparents, whom I am sure helped raise her."
He was confused by the fact that she had been left in his care. It didn't make any sense to him.
Laili frowned, then took Wesley's hand.
"Is there anything I can do to help?" she asked, knowing how upset and stunned he must be by all this sudden shift in things.
He looked up at her from the floor and squeezed her hand. "Stand by me?" He just wanted to make sure that she would stay with him. Suddenly having a kid might scare a person off.
"Of course," Laili said. There was never any doubt in her mind that she'd do otherwise.
"Look at all you've stood by me for. I would stand by you in all things, Wesley. I promise."
He smiled, probably the first smile since they had arrived. One could see the relief in his eyes. "Thank you," he said.
