Who: Wesley and Kristianna
When: Thursday, December 26
Where: London
She sat on the windowsill in her room, forehead pressed lightly against the windowpane. Green eyes touching on each car that seemed to slow on the street below as it passed by the house of her grandparents. The teen wondering if the trailing car would be the one to come to a stop at the front curb. Would the man that emerged be the mirror image, though older now in years, of the boy she had seen in some of the pictures her mother had kept from a time so long ago?
She hadn't found out until after the funeral, when they returned to the house, that he "father" was in the city and had been notified of her mother's death. Additional news she received was that a meeting was in the works (only later that evening would she learned the time and place). A meeting that had her in a state of mixed emotions. Both dreading and looking forward to it. Needless to say, it put the teen in an anxious state.
Wesley drove up the driveway of the Balfour home, trying not to think too much. At the funeral, he had stared at whom he could have sworn was Leanna for an entire minute before thinking clearly enough to realize that it had to be Kristianna. She was her mother's twin at that age.
He looked up at the home, realizing that it hadn't changed since he had last been there as a teenager. After parking his car, he slowly walked up the walk to the door, and rang the doorbell, trying to prepare himself for going inside and so far, failing miserably.
Twin pools of green tracked the man from the car he parked and emerged from, along the cement path from the street, and then up the front walk. Tia only lost sight of him when he reached the steps at the front door. He had that familiar look. One that had been captured in pictures she had seen. Definitely a resemblance to the youth he had once been.
"Wesley." Tia's grandfather giving a curt nod when he opened the door to receive the visitor the family had been expecting. "Come in." The man making a step to the side to give Wesley room for entering.
"Hello, sir," Wesley said as he stepped inside of the home. The inside hadn't changed much, either. A flood of memories came back to him as he walked inside. He stopped just after walking past Leanna's father, looking around for a second, remembering being here with so much when he was a teenager. He and Leanna had grown up together, so he had been here a lot. He snapped back out of his memories after a few seconds, turning to look at Leanna's father.
"Leanna's mother and myself will not contest our daughter's wishes as stated in the letter, but we want you to consider how this all will effect Kristianna." He said when Wesley made a turn to finally face him. His main concern at the moment was the well-being of his granddaughter.
"I understand, sir," Wesley said. What he wanted to ask was, 'Why didn't anyone tell me for sixteen years that I had a daughter?' but he couldn't bring himself to do it. Not now, anyway. "I'm actually not sure how to go about this. I don't want to upset her any more than she already is."
"This is awkward all around, Wesley. Just start out slow." He told him. "An introduction may be a good way to start things off. If you care to wait out in the back, I'll get Kristianna. She has been keeping herself secluded in her room for the most part."
"I'll wait outside for her, sir," Wesley said. He was right though. The only way to start off anything was an introduction. He started toward where he remembered to door to the back was, just wanting to make everything as easy as possible.
Tia stepped with more then a slight hesitancy through the back door out into the large, fenceless back yard of the house. After Wesley had faded from her sight when he arrived, Tia left the confines of her room, making it as far as the landing at the top of the staircase. She heard the sound of voices below, but wasn't really able to distinguish anything that was being between her grandfather and father. And only after her grandfather made it half way up the stairs before catching sight of her and relaying to the teen that Wesley would be wanting out in the back for a formal meeting did Tia take the first steps down the stairs. The teen slowly then making her way through the lower level of the house and out toward the back.
Wesley was lost in thought while waiting for Kristianna to come out, if she would even be willing to come out at all. He had been looking around the yard, flitting though different memories of him and Leanna playing in the back yard as children, or sitting and talking when they were teenagers. When he heard the door open behind him, he turned around, thinking for a moment that he was seeing another memory before realizing that it was Kristianna that had come through the back door, not Leanna. "Hello, Kristianna," he said.
): "Hello...” Her words seeming to instantly drift off. Eyes the color of green emeralds appearing to study the man that now stood a mere few feet from her. How was she supposed to refer to him? Would it be in a formal way or would it be on a first name basis.
"You look older then in the pictures." The first words coming to mind stumbling awkwardly out. What does one say to the father they are meeting for the first time.
"You can call me Wesley if you'd like," he said when her words trailed off. Honestly, he wasn't sure if he could handle being called 'father' or 'dad' just yet. When she mentioned a picture, he asked, "You have a picture of me?"
"Mother does...did." A soft sigh trailing out after the words. She knew her mother was gone, but Tia still caught herself occasionally referring to her mother in the present tense. It was as if a part of her couldn't let go. "She kept a couple." Offering a light smile.
"I still have a few of her myself," Wesley said, smiling a little. He couldn't help but stare at Kristianna for a moment. He let out a soft chuckle. "I can't believe how much you look like her." It really was an amazing resemblance, at least to him.
"Someone once mistook us for sisters." Tia offered up with a smile of remembrance of the time not all that long ago.
"I can imagine that," Wesley replied. He wasn't sure what to say next. There was so much he wanted to ask her, but he looked confused on where to begin.
"Did you ever marry?" Kristianna finally finding a way to bridge the silence that seemed to come between them. It might be an inappropriate subject to bring up considering that father and daughter were meeting for the first time. However, Tia had a way of saying things that were completely out of the blue.
Her mother never had. Leanna's world seemed to revolve around her work and daughter, so there wasn't much time left for socializing. Not that she didn't have the occasional date. Things just never progressed from there.
Good. Something to talk about. He didn't find it inappropriate at all. "No, I never married. I only recently started seeing someone seriously. She's with me in England right now, but she's staying at my family's home at the moment." He paused for a moment. "I feel bad leaving her with my family," he looked up at her from the ground where he was staring, "but I wanted to meet you alone first." His own eyes were blue as the sky. Kristianna had gotten her emerald green eyes from her mother as well.
A light smile broke through at that. It was awkward enough just meeting Wesley for the first time, having someone else come along would have made things more so. So many things rushed through her mind that Tia hadn't a clue, which question to toss out first.
Wesley thought for a moment. "Would it be ok if I took you out to dinner tomorrow night, so that we can get to know each other better?" he asked her.
"I think I would like that." Tia returned after a moment of thought. It was inevitable now that they would have to try to get to know each other. During her growing up years, she had never heard anything of a negative sort about him from her mother or grandparents. Moreover, she knew her mother would not have let Wesley learn she was his daughter if he was in any way of the wrong sort.
