There is a concept that some of my otherwise intelligent friends and relatives cannot understand. That concept is "lack of money". They just can't it. For them, money is something that's just there. It magically appears in their bank accounts and makes their credit card balances disappear - all without any effort on their part. The vast majority of them don't have enough to, say, wander into a car dealership on whim and leave with a new car (although some of them do). But lack of money has never stopped them from traveling, going out on weekends, or god forbid not made purchases at the supermarket because of a tight budget (yet another alien concept).
It lingers between amusing and frustrating to see such intelligent individuals with advances degrees in engineering, physics, medical, legal, political science fields, etc, be so dumbfounded by a simple concept that they just ignore it all together.
Right now, I have practically no money. Law school is ridiculously expensive and, as an international student, I do not have access to the financial aid and other loans that most students have. I took out the maximum private loan that I could and that does not even cover all of my tuition. And it's driving me insane to just think about asking my parents for funding - I'm almost 29 for crying out loud! So I'm not going out with my classmates, I can't afford a plane ticket home for spring break, and I seriously watch what I buy at the supermarket.
I just signed my rent check, which once cleared will leave about 50 bucks to my name (I've been living on savings from last year).
I told this to my friend over the phone. [She owes me around $250 since December for some errands I had to run for her when she was overseas. She hadn't yet paid not bc she was trying to stick me, but because it hadn't occurred to her that I might need this money.] Not two minutes after I tell her this, she asks if I want to go to Vegas with her over spring break since it's just 550 per person for 4 nights.
If M has 50 in February. M receives 250. She pays utilities, rent, gas, and food in February. YET In March, M has 550 to go to Vegas.
What is missing to solve this equation?
That thing called money that magically appears in my spoiled friends' bank accounts without even having to work for it!!!
Well guess what? Not on my planet!!! That equation just doesn't add up. I don't not envy them their money, but act like I'm the bad guy for "not wanting to" (what they understand when I say "can't afford to") go out or travel with them. I'm tired of having to explain such a simple concept as "no money".
