Aunt Beanie

Friday night was rough on my family. Jennifer, my cousin, called saying that my aunt made a turn for the worse. Fighting the pneumonia and flu weakened her heart too much. She had been fighting MS for over twenty years, and that greatly weakened her. We all met at the hospital that night and visited with her (rotating out since they didn't want a lot of people in her room.)

We had a big scare when my aunt stopped breathing. Most of us were in the little consultation room we confiscated when my dad came in telling Jennifer to go back there quickly. She ran out along with her husband. The rest of us headed back there, too.

Thinking back on it, it felt so surreal. It's like a scene in a movie. As my younger cousin's wife, my sister, Beth, and I were racing down the hall; we saw my younger cousin bring my mom back to the consultation room. Both of them were in tears. As I saw the door to my aunt's room, I saw a crowd of nurses and doctors rushing around. My uncle was waving everyone to go back.

Everyone we back to the consultation room and the floodgate holding back the tears burst. My cousin's wife said that she had to find out what was going on, so she left. Then she came back and told us to go back there and hurry.

My aunt started breathing again!

My uncle said that she stopped breathing, and they tried to reviver her with no success. Then she started right back up and asked if they would straighten her pillows. Her heart and breathing rate never really stabilized, though. Around mid-night, we decided to leave since she was at least sleeping. Jennifer and my uncle stayed.

About 2:00am Saturday, she passed away. My uncle didn't tell my mom until about 5AM, and my parents didn't tell me until later that morning. I guess everyone was letting people catch up on sleep.

Today was the visitation. She looked like she was sleeping and would wake up at any moment to ask for a better pillow.

Tomorrow is the funeral. I have the honor to be a pallbearer.

We haven't told my grandfather yet. He's recovering slowly, and we don't want to let him know until he's stabilized.

health, family
