Forsaken
“It’s hard, always being the one left behind.”
“You’re telling me.” Jack leans over, pours them more wine. “But you see them, right? And Rose calls?”
“Never enough.” Jackie gulps her wine. “One phone call a month, if I’m lucky. But she’s fine. She’s happy.” She hesitates. “They both are.”
“Good.” Jack leans back against the sofa. “I really mean that.”
She nods. “I know.” She lays her head against his shoulder, and he holds her hand.
“You can’t ever tell them,” he reminds her, one finger stroking the precautionary capsule in his pocket.
He stands. “Same time next month?”
