If anyone hasn't yet heard the story of Andrew Shirvell, Assistant District Attorney of Michigan, and his
online harassment of the gay president of student council at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, it makes
fascinating reading. Fascinating, as in I can't believe that a grown, professional man is actually behaving like this - and believes that it's okay! I find it impossible to generate any kind of rage against this guy; I'm just too gobsmacked at his idiocy and lack of any kind of self-censorship.
He has protested outside the student's home and campaigned against him, and maintains an online blog in which he labels the student, Chris Armstrong, as a racist, a nazi and a liar, and accuses him of promoting 'a radical homosexual agenda' and 'the cult of homosexuality'. Yes, the accusations are as disgusting as they are bizarre - but the best things about the whole issue are, first, what Shirvell's boss, Michigan's DA, has said about him:
"...his immaturity and lack of judgment outside the office are clear."
(although unfortunately so far the DA's office has not seen fit to fire Shirvell for bringing his employer into disrepute)
and also Anderson Cooper's interview with Shirvell, available on the CNN news page linked above, in which Shirvell reveals himself to be a complete and utter moron with, apparently, hole-digging skills that possibly even exceed his legal skills as an ADA. Let's hope the embedding works!
