Smoking will be banned in pubs, clubs and other licensed premises within three years as part of a State Government plan to protect hospitality workers from passive smoking and discourage Victorians from taking up the habit

We have only 1 goth club in Perth that runs weekly on a Saturday night. It's in a heritage listed building and has been smoke free since its' inception. Even when there is competition from other clubs running once off nights, it's still very busy, and has an outdoor smokers' area. Moist smokers seem pretty happy with the set up, there's only a few who have issues with it from what I can tell.
Personally, I think it's great, and I am really glad to hear that laws are coming into effect slowly so I'll be able to go out clubbing in Melbourne and NOT get burned on the dancefloor by inconsiderate smokers, and not go home stinking like an ashtray :)
While on one hand yes having one nightclub that is smoke free i am sure works for them. My main concern is not really not personally being able to smoke. It is more the safety aspect of it all. When most smokers exit from the club to light up they will be on the street which will mean a need for more security for the patrons where there is passers by. My other concern being running a club is that people will go outside to lightup finish their cigarette and think hmm might as well go home..which is not good for me or the bar at the club i work for. I also wonder have the anti cancer council really thought a lot of this through meaning they get quite a lot of the tax money from cigarettes to run their campaigns..what ever will they do when we stop;)

Err... sorry but I'm going to have to really pound you for that one. Tax revenue from cigraettes is a tiny percentage of the actual cost to taxpayers for medical care of those who are hospitalised from smoking related illnesses. It doesn't even come close to adding up and is one of the lamest excuses in the book to justify smoking.
Also, outside areas where smoking is allowed which are still controlled by the club should be mandatory [which is the situation we have: it's not a hugely comfortable area but people are mostly okay with it afaik], because expecting people to stand on the street and go in & out constantly is indeed as you say, not good.
gawd i hear ya. I mean not that i get to smoke all those cigs while am playing cause i light one up change the music talk to patron about song organise next few tracks go to have a puff and its burnt out...hehe
At least goths will smell *slightly* less stinky. Being sober in a club won't be half as digusting either.. Can't say I love the whole beer soaked cigarette butts left around the place.. hair smelling of smoke even after washing it.. maybe one day venues will smell like roses :P I'm sure that would be lovely when you're packing up at 6am :)
oo you are alive!!!!! Jesus woman how are you where you been? Long time no hear and all that jazz;) Goths smelling of roses hmm i think actually the place will smell more of talcum powder from it being all sweaty under those pvc outfits. hehe
I understand as a non smoker this is a great step. I know how i feel when some one lights up a joint in a venue i hate the smell and can smell it miles away..so yeah i do understand..its more i guess a worry for promoters and club owners with how many people will it stop from coming out because they no longer have the freedom...
and I also have to link you to this now as the other side of the coin, sorry - there are people out there, sure, we don't know how many - who don't come out because they can't be around cigarette smoke. It could be alot more than you think and balance out the heavy smokers pretty evenly.
