I cannot believe how busy we have been around here! So many things accomplished! Such lovely items created! So many more things to do! Oh vey! (All people who suffer are Jewish--so says Jerry Lewis) But, at last, I have a chance to catch up on my writing (actually, I'm taking time away from my busy laundering schedule, oh well!), and to let you know, Gentle Reader, just what we've been up to.
We've been working a lot in the garden. Pulling up exhausted plants, testing pH content, re-arranging soil, setting in the cold frames--all of this has taken far more time (and energy!) than Lachlan and I had anticipated--standard operating procedure around here. However, I have to say that I'm quite pleased with the end result:
Now, all we have to do is plant our seeds in them, and we're off! (Okay, admittedly, we're rather off anyway; but you know what I mean!) If you're curious about their construction, and our garden experiment in general, you can view my other blog at
http:/mygardenandsuch.blogspot. com/ and check out what we've done with the whole thing. I made a link in that blog that would send people to this blog; I also said something along the order of "I would link to this blog from that blog, and force my readers in a perpetual cycle of running from it to this until the Web exploded" or something like that. Let's see if my prediction comes true. ;-)
It was pleasant working out in the garden, though. The temperature was mild; the wind was blowing a gale, but that's not unusual for Kansas; the dogs enjoyed being out with us for most of the day; and I got to be with Lachlan, the Wonder Hubby, and Creator of the cold frames. These are all good things.
Here's a picture of the finished interior of our feast gear box:
Very nice, don't you think? Isn't that fabric gorgeous? It's been in my fabric stash for years, just waiting for the right project, I guess. All I did was hot glue it to the walls Lachlan constructed from very dense styrofoam. There was even enough of it left to make a matching tablecloth. Upshot: We now have fabulous looking feast gear, and a rolling feast gear box to keep it all in. Cool, huh?
Lachlan attached a platform base and wheels to the bottom of the rattan cube: I quite like the result, don't you? He wants to stain the platform; I don't think it really matters, but if that's what he wants to do, I'm all for it. Like I've always said, keeps us off the streets and out of the pubs.
I'm still hand-sewing the trim on my new linen overdress. It takes me so long to hand-sew; my hands cramp something terrible after about 30 minutes of diligence. Still, placing the trim on by hand makes me wish that I'd sewn the whole dress by hand; then I could maybe enter it into an arts and sciences competition or something. I don't know: Would it be crazy to go back and do the whole thing by hand? I've never done a hand-sewn gown before. Could be really cool, or could be a completely idiotic thing to try. I'll have to think about it......
Lachlan's been so busy with my projects that he hasn't had a chance to practice on his Viking wire weaving; I'm hoping he gets a shot at it tonight. I live in perpetual fear that all the things I want to do will eventually wear him out instead of me. Still, it's so vey nice to have a partner willing to aid me in whatever follies my short attention span leads me to. I don't think I'll ever get used to that.....come to think of it, it would probably be better for our marriage if I don't get used to that. I never want to take advantage of him.
On to the next projects: Finishing my dress; making another tunic for Lachlan; sewing for the household; planning my period garden for the Spring, and--
Oh yeah! We here in Vatavia are having a mini event in November; on the 15th, to be precise. It will be a combination Regional Fighter Practice (there will be authorizations) and Education day. Since the Barony doesn't seem to have anything posted on its website about the event, you can get the details from me. Just email me or comment on this blog and I'll send you all the info that I have. I'm personally teaching a Garb 101 class (Constructing a T-tunic) and a "How to Document Your Lovely Doobis" class. I know there are many more classes planned; if you're not doing anything and are in the area, c'mon by! (Which reminds me, I've got to get short synopses of my classes to good Syr Wulfric, one of the coordinators, by Friday. *sigh* More writing!) We're also going to have a Chili contest (okay, so maybe chili's not exactly a period dish; it sure tastes good on a cold November day!) I think it'll be a lot of fun!
So, I think me and my little blond buddy, Chaz, and my littler brown pal, Gus, need to go and get some serious rest time. I'm tired from all this writing, and I know those two just love an excuse to snuggle. And, well, so do I!
