Journey
so friday kendra and i arrive at the airport to find that because we did not re-confirm our flights 3 to 5 days ahead of time, ethiopian airlines assumed we weren't showing up for the flight and proceeded to sell our seats. long story short, kendra was able to make it on the flight and i spent one more night in tanzania. which wasn't all that bad, and the woman at ethiopian airlines was very nice and took good care of me.
good news: i got an AMAZING view of mt. kilimanjaro on our way to the airport on saturday. it was so beautiful. i was rerouted through rome and its much easier to reach croatia through rome than france, and much closer.
bad news: lufthansa would not refund my paris to croatia flight (via frankfurt) nor would they give me credit for it, even though the ethiopian airlines lady had cancelled me flight prior to take-off. i know this because she handed me my new reservation confirmation before the flight in paris would have taken off. so i had a seat, but it wasn't paid for. bummer. oh yeah, and also because i had missed the first half of the trip, my return flight was also cancelled with no refund. the round-trip flight from paris to croatia would cost €300, about 500 dollars.
so after 3 hours of running around the rome airport trying to figure out if i could get a flight to croatia from any of the airlines that fly there and asking random people if they had a eurail schedule, i found out there was a train to ancona (on the east coast of italy). and i know from experience that i could catch a ferry from ancona to split. so i found an internet point at the airport, and 5 minutes and 5 euro later, i knew i could be in split by 8:30 am, monday morning.
so here i am in italy. i had a lovely afternoon in rome giving myself a two hour self-guided tour of the roman ruins and the colosseum (sadly i didnt have enough time to go inside). i had always wanted to see the colosseum and the forum since i first started taking latin. so i finally got to. but i gotta go back and go inside the colosseum. i'm such a nerd. it was really exciting.
anyway, i gotta go catch the ferry. all in all it was a good day. and it involved gelatto. yum.
