I just spent 40 minutes standing outside the bar arguing passionately with my Catholic friend Ed about same sex marriage, the proper role of government WRT SSM and the difference between orthodox Jewish theology vs Christian theology (a rule based religion vs an actions based one). There was a point where there was some honest, respectful debate there. I remember going for a long time regarding Old Testament prophesies and their connection to Jesus Christ with an Orthodox Jew, and it was very lively, but not the least bit contention.

I'm glad you got some mental gymnastics in. In fact, I wish I had been there, if not to participate, then at least to listen and experience it vicariously.

Did you get to yell "CITE??!!" at least once?

And I agree with DaveW, the SDMB used to be a great place for respectful debate. (Of course, I rarely venture into Great Debates, so I don't keep tabs on this thing.)
