Hello

My regular posts are under another name; I have this journal to comment on fan fiction, mostly Star Trek fan fiction, though I also spent a short time checking out the Heroes universe.

My own Star Trek and Heroes fan fiction can be found at Archive of Our Own.

Because I lived in a TV-free household for several decades, there's a lot of stuff I've never seen.  I saw TOS before moving into that household, and I started watching Heroes in April of 2014, after the no-TV restrictions were relaxed.  I plan to watch TNG and Buffy and Voyager and Babylon 5, all things that my friends have told me I MUST see, years or even decades after everyone else has seen them.  I realize that this makes me strange even in fandoms that are already known for their strangeness. :-)

I have twenty-seven Star Trek stories (mostly TOS), one Heroes story, and one Star Trek essay:

My Star-Trek-related fan fiction tends to be of several types.  It's mostly set in TOS, but there are a couple of reboot pieces:

Mainstream Star Trek stories

"Episode Epilogues" -- This is a series of missing scenes that add to - or resolve - the events of the episodes.

"Defending Vulcanity" -- Kirk gets some advice about wooing Spock from an unusual source. (No, not McCoy. No, not Amanda. No, not Sarek. :-D)

"They Say Vulcans Can't Lie" -- James Kirk learns - in a somewhat unusual way - why people say that Vulcans cannot lie.  This is probably my most popular story.

"Legally Friends" -- A visit to a planet where spouses don't exist and friendship is the foundation of society paradoxically causes Kirk and Spock to realize that they want to be more than friends.

"Strength Training" -- When Spock's biobed readings are anomalous, Spock has to explain certain aspects of Vulcan life to Kirk and McCoy.  (No, not pon farr; this is new Weird Vulcan Stuff, not the Weird Vulcan Stuff you already know and love. :-D)

"An Embarrassing Savior" -- A mainstream adventure tale with only friendship. WIP (Work in Progress)

"Timelines Try to Repair Themselves" -- I "fix" reboot Jim to make him more Kirkian

Short Pieces, Mostly Character Studies

"Amanda Enlightens Jim" -- A cute little pre-slash story for K/Sers, this is my second-most popular story.

"A Logical Form of Relationship" -- Why it's eminently logical for Vulcans to have gay or lesbian relationships.

"Captain Christopher's Insight" -- This is a "missing scene" from the episode "Tomorrow Is Yesterday" (the one where the Enterprise goes back in time to the 20th century and an Air Force pilot investigates her as a UFO).  In this little tale, Captain Christopher gives Dr. McCoy a new way to think about Vulcans.

"Love Does Not Equal Sex" -- A story in which Kirk and Spock have a relationship that is romantic but not sexual.
"Amanda's Advice for Newlyweds" -- Amanda Grayson goes to Earth to attend a friend's wedding and is asked for the secret of her own happy marriage. Her friend is surprised to hear that Amanda thinks her marriage to Sarek is exceptionally happy BECAUSE she married an alien.

"His Example" -- Kirk and Spock talk over Spock Prime's death, a reaction to the ourpouring of Christian imagery when Mr. Nimoy died.

"Rebel" -- Kirk thinks it's an inarguable fact that he and Spock are very different, but Spock Prime begs to differ.

"Guardian" -- As the sole Vulcan on board a ship bearing 429 humans, Spock has an obvious role to play. Yet this role should not become TOO obvious, lest this undermine the humans' confidence...

"An Angel's Soul -- What Christine Chapel saw in Spock's mind when they shared consciousness during "Return to Tomorrow"

"The Size of the Chain" -- One way Spock's human friends can tell that he has emotions, even if he'll never admit to them.

"Reining in McCoy -- Kirk finally tells McCoy that he's gone too far.

"Spock's Appeal" -- Fangirl squeeing over Spock, (thinly) disguised as a story. :-)

"Expressed DNA" -- Why Spock seems way more than half Vulcan, even though he has one parent of each species.

"Implications of Known Facts -- Uhura's friends -- especially Christine Chapel -- are desperately curious about what Spock is like in bed, but Spock is a very private person, so Uhura can't tell them anything ... or can she?

"Shepherd" -- A very short piece that's mostly a "Spock knows everything" joke, with a smidgen of "Spock likes Kirk" and of "Spock likes being useful"

"Spock vs. Roddenberry" -- Spock prevents Roddenberry from ruining our beloved characters in TMP.

BDSM-oriented Star Trek stories (NOT for everybody)

"Whipping Boy" -- What else was in the "evil" Kirk during "The Enemy Within"? How does Spock deal with Kirk's less socially-acceptable qualities? How does Spock help Kirk accept this side of himself and even use the opportunity to bring them closer together? (This is one of the best things I've done but features intense BDSM and sadistic Kirk/submissive Spock and is definitely not for everybody.)

"The BDSM Photography Project" -- A RPF story featuring Leonard Nimoy and the reader. There's no sex in this story, but there is a moderately intense BDSM scene. This is probably the best thing I've ever done, but it's very definitely not for everybody. :-)

"Trust and Control" -- Spock and Uhura have a D/S relationship. WIP

"The Price of Admission" -- A het pon farr story with a female OC, featuring violence and pain. Not for everybody.  (I wrote this story before I'd ever read any Star Trek fan fiction.  It was writing this and thinking, "Now that I've written this thing, what the heck do I DO with it" that led me to the fanfic community.  I'm still finding my way into that community, so if there are places you think I should check out, please do feel free to suggest them!)

Essays

"Mistakes to Avoid When Writing TOS" -- Exactly what the title says, this essay is intended to be helpful, not prescriptive.  You can do anything you want in fan fiction -- that's part of the goal and the glory of fanfic -- but if you actually want to get your TOS trivia correct, here are some commonly made mistakes that you might wish to avoid.

Heroes
"Feeding the Hunger" -- In this post-Wall world, Sylar and Peter are lovers who must figure out how to handle the problem of Sylar's Hunger, now that Sylar is trying to be good.  The solution they come up with will test their relationship and their understanding of themselves.
