So I know I sometimes watch way too much television. Its a sad or interesting fact depending I guess on your attitude towards TV and/or your attitude towards the programs that I watch. But I know I watch a lot, even if its not very broad in range. So much so that's it has been hard for me to record/watch all new episodes I want to see, with sometimes numerous programs coinciding or following one after the other. Even so with a VCR/VHS video recorder (sometimes even two!) I realise the juggling would be way worse now because our TV channels don't seem to keep to their intended schedules anymore. And its SO frustrating! I have come to realise that DVD sets of some of my shows would be very handy.
With VHS (for if there is anyone of an age reading this that has never used a VCR before) I realise that there is more than the annoying reality of having to spend time fast forwarding through tape to get to a section where a different programme has been recorded or to skip a few (and only a few because VHS tapes hold a limited amount generally a maximum of 4hrs worth, 4 programs) to see to something you want/need to watch before a different episode. And if you don't remember or can't be bothered to write the shows down onto the tape or somewhere else it takes even more time to go through each tape to figure out what you have recorded previously! All in all it can get very annoying.
As I said, there is the fact of the matter that the tapes are very limiting when you think of a USB these days. But there is also the issue of the physicality (is that a word? *looks it up in a PHYSICAL dictionary* It is. Thought so, glad I haven't lost all of my vocabulary by reading poor fanfiction). The tapes physically wear and I never want to throw them out and get new ones, but they either stop taping on parts of the tape or it jumps it because the tape is getting thin/stretched. I have one currently that is squeaking! *cringes* I keep expecting to lose what I've taped before I watch it. But if it was a hard drive (digital) you could accumulate over 4 (hundreds potentially) and lose ALL of them when it crashes. That would be wayyy worse than just 4 shows. But the ease of a digital recorder you could skip to episodes etc in seconds.
What was this about again? Oh, yes. DVDs. My brother and I went through and named our top 10 TV shows/programmes to own on DVD(*for ease I am going to stick with the word 'program' I know it is American but typing out 'programme' is annoying me). Looking back now I think I'd change a few, but its so hard to say a top ten when I watch/have watched/want to watch possibly over 50 series! I know there's that 50 tv show meme I have not seen all of them, but there's plenty more that I have seen. So I'm just going to post the ten here. And the others I thought of.
Not in any particular order:
SG-1 (Original Stargate because I haven't seen it), Bones, CSI, CSI: Miami, CSI: NY, Doctor Who, Stargate: Atlantis, Black Books, Firefly, Moonlight.
When typing this (which is very carthatic and soothing) I knew I really could NOT mention some others:
Charmed- one of the first supernatural tpye things other than Sabrina the Teenaged Witch. I never saw the early seasons with Prue. I wasn't really allowed to watch it (or Buffy) even when all my classmates in Primary school did. But I was allowed to see The Bill. *facepalms* I could see shooting, swearing, death and prostitution but not any good episodes of Charmed that had less fighting/death?
NCIS, JAG- How can I not have one of the Bellisario beauties??
I could add more for hours, but if I am compiling a list of DVD programs to have only. I guess I'd have to live without Castle/Without a Trace/Life! (oh my gosh I just realised I blanked on Life yesterday! But sadly...even Life. *sighs*)
New improved list:
SG-1, Bones, CSI, CSI: Miami, Charmed, JAG, CSI: NY, Doctor Who, Stargate: Atlantis, Black Books, Firefly, Moonlight.
I'd have like more comedy like The IT Crowd, Father Ted or Vicar of Dibley but other than them I don't watch much straight comedy programs. I know Bones isn't actually that 'great' and NCIS would win in overall...but I think the attitude is a bit more lighter and originally with all three CSI's it needed to be there. I have a feeling I'm missing something but I can't remember the finished/cancelled programs.
Uhm, anyone out there interested in TW(Torchwood) season 3 is now airing here, and I'm going to do a total post of my thoughts on the eps in one go. So that'd be in a number of weeks just saw Ep2 tonight.
