Write your own food biography: My Life in 10 Dishes

Write your own food biography I've seen around and thought it would be a little fun.

1. Spinach

When I was a baby and toddler my mum found that I really liked the spinach she pureed up for me to eat. And so she often froze pureed spinach into cubes using ice block trays so she could defrost a couple for dinner each night for me. I still adore spinach, but now in those ricotta cheese pastries more often than not. *grins*

2. Porridge

Mm. Well, dad having a lot of English background liked his porridge a bit when he was younger. So he used to make me porridge using rolled oats (yep ol’ fashioned way) for breakfast during weekends in winter. And later when Uncle Toby’s Oats and pre-prepared porridge came out, I had those high salt and sugar packets. Yum. Honey is the best one. :) But I did miss the thicker bowls of heavy oats when you put your own sugar on top and see it run into the milk etc. Hm, I haven’t had that in awhile…

3. Congee and, chicken and corn soup

My mum hasn’t really made congee but she makes the chicken and corn soup. I loved eating congee (rice soup basically, rice cooked and cooked with water and stock and whatever you want to add until it’s done) when we went out to yum cha every month. Haven’t gone in years (story for another day there) but the homemade chicken and corn soup? Yum. Not even made for days when I was ‘sick’. I found it tasted so good I always said you could can the stuff and sell it at the supermarket and it would be just as good if not better!

4. Eggs, bacon and bread

This was my staple meal for breakfast for the majority of my Saturday mornings throughout school terms from grade 5 to year 11/12. Sustenance for my early morning bouts of tennis! Probably not the healthiest but I didn’t have it every day nor did I faint from lack of food like a couple of my opponents (okay just the one girl that one time!)

5. Pancakes

During holidays or weekends for breakfast when we had too many lemons growing on our trees and we used them squirted over the pancakes with sugar! Yum

6. Homemade ice-cream

Dad made this when we were too young to help, then we helped out. I didn’t like too many versions of the later ones but its always fun finding huuuge chocolate chunks in your ice cream! ;)

7. Rice Pudding

Dad made this during winter, again with the English food. Sweet rice (sugar and more sugar!) and milk and some vanilla flavor ( by pods or beans or essence) add some more milk once it’s out of the oven and you’ve got a nice little dessert!

8. Lasagne/pasta/spaghetti Bolognese

Again with the tennis. But Thursday nights and once or twice Wednesday nights was usually my tennis lesson afternoon. So mum took me to tennis and had to come pick me up. So she had less time to prepare a meal for us. This resulted in us having pasta night on Thursdays! Usually lasagna but occasionally swapped with spaghetti Bolognese or pasta and Bolognese sauce as it was pretty quick and easier to prepare. Yum.

9. Chocolate ripple cake (aka UK: Zebra Cake US: Icebox Cake as I just found out)

I don’t remember when we started having this. But we liked the Chocolate Ripple Biscuits (it’s a brand name biscuit type hence the name of the cake) so when dad made us chocolate ripple cake it was a hit! When we were old enough to prepare it it’s a really simple cake to make! Get a packet (or two) of chocolate ripple biscuits, whip up some cream to peaks and spread the biscuits with the whipped cream covering the the sides after you’ve used all the biscuits. Leave overnight in the fridge to soak. And cut when you want to eat after dinner or for afternoon tea!

10. Gulab Jamun

Indian take away night usually results in us getting thrown a few free Gulab Jamuns. And the first time I had them I found it odd but sweet. I love them now! Sugar sugar and a little bit of cakey stuff. ;)

PS. I could have always added more dishes to this but these were the first that came to mind!
