Movies: Dead Snow

Or Dod Sno, it its native Norwegian.

Saw it tonight at a midnight showing at SIFF. What a kick in the pants! It’s the simple “besieged cabin in the middle of nowhere” setup. The young attractive victims are kinda-smug med students. (You kinda hope the zombies eat a few of them right away.) And the zombies…they were NAZI zombies! Zombie Nazis! Um, ugly-ass dead guys who had been zombies when they were alive!

These zombies were fast, vicious, and animalistic in their pursuit of prey. That was pretty creepy. But there were so many wonderful splatstick moments too. I’d say this movie was a 60/40 split of horror and comedy, much like “Severence.” The humor is seriously nasty, just the way I like it. And the gore. The GORE! WOW it was a regular gorehound ragin’ party! Some of it was splatstick. Much of it was just deeply gross and disturbing. I swear, this movie challenges “Day of the Dead” for onscreen intestine yardage.

While the gore was top-notch, I found the zombie make-up to be slightly inferior. Definitely not current George Romero quality. A few (probably ill advised) close-up shots of the head Nazombie (like my new word?) you could pretty much see that he had latex on his head. They went for an effect that I always find ill-advised. They wanted this guy’s lower lip to be partially decayed so his lower teeth showed. But they did this by attaching a latex piece to the actor’s lower lip, which just never looks right. It gives the wearer a kind of unrealistic “bulldog” look. But hey, I’m not complaining. The movie itself was wildly entertaining.

The movie has a few fun surprises that I didn’t see coming, and a great ending. If you’re a zombie fan with a strong stomach, I highly recommend it.
