I'm still not asleep, so I feel compelled to tell you about a charming docmuentary I say this weekend. It's called "Rabbit Hash," named for the tiny little town in Kentucky that elected a dog as mayor in 1998.
The scenery is beautiful, and the people are awesome. Rabbit Hash is this fascinating blend of old-fashioned Kentucky folk, and a "recent" (within the past 20-30 years) influx of artists, writers, software designers, and other fascinating characters. Unlike the common myth about such things, the old-school folks and the newfangled folks get along just fine. Everybody in Rabbit Hash seems very happy, actually. I kind of want to live there.
I also learned something I never knew before. It's the fine Kentucky art of "dog standing." Basically, you find a dead animal by the side of the road, preferably in rigor mortis. You make up a funny sign like "Will work for food" or "Need a ride to Georgia." Then you prop dead animal up on sign in as lifelike a pose as you can manage. Then you take pictures of your artwork, and hide in the bushes, giggling wildly every time someone comes by and sees your creation.
I am SO going to do that.
