The awesome
shaolingrrl clued me in to this one. It was directed by Sono Shion, the same director who was responsible for one of my all-time favorite surreal J-splat movies, "Suicide Club."
Wow. Strange circus kind of epitomises the phrase "not for everyone." I found it deeply disturbing. And y'know, I'm just not deeply disturbable anymore. The subject matter is horrifying. And just when you think you have a handle on it, the director yanks the rug out from under you, and you have to start over again. It's beautifully filmed, with plenty of gorgeous (as well as haunting and horrifying) images. I'm adding it to my list of all-time favorites. But I suggest you only check it out if you have an iron constitution and you're used to the general freakiness of the outer edges of J-horror.
Here's an interview with the director. He's adorable, if very stoned in this video.
I just found out that he's released another movie related to "Suicide Club," called "Noriko's Dinner Talbe." Noriko was a girl blogger in "Suicide Club" who figured out what was going on long before the authorities. I guess this movie is about her traveling to Tokyo before the events of "Suicide Club," and her life during and after the events. Looks interesting!
I love me teh surreal Asian cinema.
