It was a rough leadup to Halloween this year. I'd been busy as hell all month, then sick for the week and a half before the Big H. But I still plugged along with my homies at RealNetworks, preparing for the big day. This year we picked Real Zombies as our theme. We turned a corner conference room into the Winchester Tavern from Shaun of the Dead. We User Ed chix were FEMA--on the scene and ready to help! We were VERY helpful. We had a cardboard zombie shelter ready to go and everything! And lots and lots of duct tape! Another group were Blackwater contractors. I'm sensing a theme here...
Our floor usually wins the "best decorations" competition every year, because hey--we have all the designers. But this year everybody was distracted and freaked out by a huge joint venture thingy that's going on now, and not many people were into it. We still did a fine job, but the fact was, we got our asses handed to us by the 3rd floor this year. They made a jungle, complete with volcano and trees and vines and gorillas, and it TOTALLY rawked. Even Fenris had to inform me "Mom, your zombie thing is cool, but these guys totally kicked your butt." Heh. I freely admit it, and my hat's off to them. Or the top of my skull, considering that I'm a zombie.
Daniel (who was sick too) brought the boys to Real at about 2PM, where they trick-or-treated with a nearly scary efficiency and enthusiasm. They loved all the displays, and came out with huge bags of candy. We left around five, and headed to Upper Queen Anne, where the dudes did some serious neighborhood trick-or-treating. They had an absolute blast doing the "running from door to door" thing. It was huge fun to watch them. I had worried that old-skool trick-or-treating was dying, but this renewed my faith. Some of those people had decorated an absolutely insane amount. After an hour and a half of this, the kids were so tired they could hardly lift their trick-or-treat bags. We headed home, where they perked up enough to carve a couple of jack-o-lanterns before passing out in a sugar coma.
I passed out too--I was still pretty sick, and completely tired out. Not one of the wildest Halloweens I've ever had, but definitely one of the most fun. But there was no rest for the wicked, cuz our Day of the Dead party was coming up three days later!
