Kyle's backpack was heavy and the change in air burned his lungs. The portal had been moved closer to HQ, saving a long, dangerous trek from the old Tech-Com base to the new underground facility ( Read more... )

"Twas mine," George admitted cheerfully. This hadn't been what he was expecting. Admittedly even after a year and a half at Fandom, George Cooper didn't have the vocabulary to begin imagining Kyle's world. "Tis been too long t'be friends wit' th' lad and not ever seen his home."

He was talking lightly, but the hair on the back of his neck was standing up as he tried to pay attention to every bit of the environment.

Kyle beat Derek to the punch. Not an actual punch, since it was George, but a verbal one. "You know there's a good chance you're not ever going home, that you'll never see your mom again. What are you doing?"

"No need t'borrow trouble," he said, shrugging. "We'll cross that bridge when we run into it. Besides me mam'll just be pleased I'm not wit' th'Rogues Court."

"She wouldn't know." He decided to leave it at that. "I brought supplies," Kyle told Derek.

"I see that," Derek said, eyebrow already raised at the tagalong. "You bring supplies too?"

"Two backpacks bring more than one," George agreed easily. "Seemed stupid not to."

Kyle thought back to their conversation when he'd received word he had to go home. They both knew it was going to happen eventually, but Kyle hadn't been expecting it until after graduation. To bring supplies and to catch Kyle off guard the way he had, there had to have been planning involved. "When did you decide you were coming?"

"Before I wrote me mam t'tell her an' after we did talk about it," he replied with a shrug. "Does it matter?"

"You told her?" That added some weight to his decision.

"I don' think th'letter did get there yet, but I put it in th'post afore I met ye," George said. "Tol' you she'd approve."

Derek looked down unnecessarily to loosen the extra weapons he'd brought and offer one to Kyle. Probably wouldn't be a good idea to laugh at the boys sounding like little girls.

He raised another expressive eyebrow at his little brother, silently asking if he should give George a gun.

Kyle took the gun off Derek and nodded at him. He then looked down and stepped past Derek to check out the journey ahead of them.

He clapped Kyle on the shoulder then held out another gun to George.

"Don't get yourself killed," Derek remarked, jerking the kid off-balnace just for a moment so he could cuff his head.

George made a face at the smack and moved up by Kyle. "Where we headed?" he asked, aiming the questions to both Reese boys.

"HQ?" Kyle guessed, looking at Derek for confirmation. "Kate will want the medical supplies I have." He could think more about George deciding to come with him later.

"Connor wants to see you too," Derek agreed dryly. "Guessing he'll want to see your new recruit too."
