Holy tomatoes!

Sadly, there appears to be a tomato crisis happening in America- salmonella, do not eat tomatoes under pain of death, and all that jazz.

Luckily, we shouldn't have to worry about that soon.... )

You got me thinking about making homemade mozzarella. Oddly (in otherwords, "Duh!) there was Googling to be had.

Leeners offers instructions (and a pretty inexpensive kit) for 1 hour microwave mozzarella cheese, including how to control the stringy/softness of the finished product. The $24.95 "kit" reads a bit more like a chemistry experiment than a page out of Burpee catalog, but it does inspire a bit of innovation!

The good folks over at instructables.com have provided DETAILED instructions with photos and non-microwave instructions, although also requiring some things not found in normal kitchens (such as Rennet, calcium chloride and citric acid) found in the Leeners' kit.

I'll have to report back if I actually attempt this. It's wonky enough to tempt me, but more of an investment of time than... who am I kidding? I'll probably attempt it soon-ish!

A post I made on Jan 2, 2005 confirmed that I have watched my now-uncle make mozzerella cheese and I said it didn't look that hard ;-)

Hrm... okay, now that you've demonstrated I haven't done my homework....

Prove you can "easily" make mozzarella? *grin*

That gauntlet thrown, I have a suggestion for what to bring to a certain occasion I hope we can both attend!

Ok, ok, it's not "easy" in general, but maybe compared to making some other things, like a croquenbouche. lol.

I also found this recipe, but it might be no different from what you found: http://homecooking.about.com/od/cheeserecipes/r/bldairy22.htm
