First off, Peter. Peter does his "shit", let's call it that way, nothing pejorative. It works. It works because 1) Peter believes the crowd makes the night, 2) the crowd's vibe makes the night, and 3) the vibe's musical inclination makes the night. Peter probably plays more requests than anyone else, except perhaps Mathieu (I'm not too thriled with the Petsauce name), because quite frankly, there's not really a point in trying to push the enveloppe when people come to your night because you're the one spinning.
It's like buying a Rolling Stones concert ticket when you've never listened to them in your car, just to be able to claim you've been there.
JF (Kao), well. I personally don't like what he spins. Fits better at a darkrave than at Saphir or Passeport. The beatmatching is so-so. The whole Kao Production crew was a dead giveaway of a preferred treatment of buddies. The girl you speak of would never have had spots without the Kao Krew. That's okay. That's business. That's how you get it done, through contacts.
What no one says is that those nights weren't very popular. They were mainly populated by kidsters that were more interested in BPM than the actual bands or musical styles.
HOWEVER, JF's guest spots at Peter's nights is what brings new music. Instead of having whole nights devoted to new music (and failing miserably, like it did with Vulcain), a single set can condition the sterile and static masses into liking new stuff.
Which is where David (LVX) picks up. LVX specialized. He saw that being your regular goth-ebm-darkwave-electro-spinning DJ didn't work. Peter was there. peter was the generalist DJ from the previous generation of clubs that everyone liked. So David make a hook to noise. The thing is, even though his night is on a Sunday, it works. I can't say it's a frank success, but it works to some degree.
It works in the sense that it is more fitting to a Sunday night than the previous Saturdays were to Kao's night. The attendance was disappointing on Saturdays.
That brings me to Pierre (Axiene) and Napoleon. The very recent bitchfest notwithstanding, Pierre had a sweep-all effect at Chaos. It reminded me very much of Vulcain's and Uriel's nights at Balafré. The beautiful thing about "If I Die, I Die" at Chaos is that it was pristine. They didn't need to push the enveloppe, all the material they would ever need was already out. I didn't understand the move to Saphir, but it worked wonders. Saphir was making Saturday money like never before, with the Metal night with Ostrogoth on top and the 80s below.
Is it gonna stop? Dunno. But Pierre sure has accomplished something enormous, and he remains very devoted to what he does. I have absolutely no doubt he can pick something up and twist it into success. He has something most other DJs have lost: insight.
