I'm going to say a lot of stuff people have been too afraid to say for whatever reason. I'm not putting anyone down and I like the people I might end up mentioning but there are some things that are relevant to this post and I'm going to speak freely, as everyone should.
This is about spinning in the Montreal goth scene. Yes, yes, groan away but I'm a dj and I want (and probably need) to talk about this, now...
It's not about the fucking music anymore, is it? It certainly isn't about HOW people play it, either. What happened, exactly? When and how did we go from loving most of what a dj played to bitching about the dj but going anyway because "there isn't anything else" or because "i'll get so shitfaced i won't care, anyway"?!?! People say this all the time!! We love Peter. Peter is a great guy and he knows his shit. He's been keeping people on the dancefloor for, like, a decade, now. I think he deserves to have all the spots he has because he's been dealing with people and their bullshit for as long as he has and because he loves what he does but people are starting to see him as some sort of "filler". And don't fucking lie to me in here and tell me that you never said that about Peter because most people have and I WILL point it out to you directly if you dare. He's become that guy people will hire when they want to guarantee people showing up to their event, even if they bitch about him behind his back and say that he's been playing the same shit for years. But then if anyone tries playing something new, people freeze and stalk off the dancefloor to see who else might dance. You need to play new shit at 2 a.m when everyone is shitfaced or you risk killing the mood. Yes, Peter is on the menu two to three times a week but guess why? Stop bitching about it and support other djs, for fuck sakes. Or you can all shut the hell up and give Peter props to his face AND behind his back and stop fucking whining that there aren't any other club nights.
When the fuck did this start happening??? And why?? What is wrong with people?!? Remember how cool it was to go out BEFORE 2002?
I won't even get into Saphir politics. A few of us were having a blast at special nights and then we all got canned and the promo machine that is kaotik (you do it well, mister, and you're a fucking bulldozer ;P) came in with his noise/techno crew. It was all about Mentat and She Who Shall Not Be Named. Mentat is a fucking incredible dj, Kaotik is well-loved and everyone bitched about the girl playing the same shit all the time but that was the fad for over a year. Then the tornado that is Pierre swooped down and ripped the place up, redefining Saturdays and special nights. People (including myself) may have different theories as to why this is the case but, all that aside, he knows what people want to hear, he's new and exciting and it fucking works. Kudos. Seriously.
Then we have another type of batch. This batch was founded by Joltok, who is now in Quebec City (*cough*yay*cough*) but still includes LVX, Pete Sauce, FUCKING Colonel, etc etc. These guys are getting gigs like Collide and people who can really spin are scratching their heads but they're not the main event so people have a laugh and move on.
Then we have people like Claude. And Sly. And people like me. If the three of us got together and did something, it would be a fucking riot and one of the most amazing nights but would there be anyone there? Probably not. I get the most amazing compliments and people are constantly suprised by what I can pull out of my ass but when push comes to shove they go see a dj they bitch about.
So again, it would be really cool if people would stop being hypocritcal bastards and just do their shit. Don't praise people you won't support and promote and stop whining about the people you pay to hear several times a week. Jesus fucking Christ. It's been long enough, hasn't it? Shut UP.
On that note, I want to spin again. I miss it too much. I literally have to stop listening to music at home if I don't want to go nuts thinking about it. I won't try to squeeze in between Pete Sauce and Colonel anymore; it's too fucking degrading and won't do it. Syndrome was a, er, noble attempt at something but they wanted 400 people and I had a Wednesday and it was far and and and...
So where should I go? The Loft still wants me to give them a demo. Do I feed off the mad hipster trend going on? Do I aim at English uni students, the gay village? If you've heard me, tell me where you think I could actually have a great time and make people dance until they physically can't anymore. I want to see the sweat fly up into my light beams and I want to hear people yell because they love it so much, like it was at Passeport...
Seriously. You like what I do? Support me now and give me some advice. Where does DJ Khimera go now?
Note:
I'm screening comments and will only unscreen them once I see that nobody is putting anyone else down. I mean it. No nastiness.
If people have interesting things to say, I will make this public and invite more people in on the discussion.
