i've been without internet for 5 days now. the school has some computers, but they are a 25 minute walk away. it's ok though...i've been too busy to notice.
my first class starts in just about a half an hour, so i'll try to update you on as much as i can.
i'm living in a 2 bedroom, 4 person flat on the first floor...even though i have to go up 2 flights of stairs to get there. over here, the first floor is actually the 2nd floor of the building. it doesn't have any hot water at the time being, but there is probably someone over there right now working on that. cold showers are painful in the morning, but it really wakes you up, especially if you are somewhat hungover. we're cooking a lot now because it's so expensive to eat out. groceries are much cheaper.
i've been here 5 nights now, and last night was the first i've been here where i haven't gone out drinking or pubbing. there are so many good pubs near our flat, one of which has a few flat screen tv's for football watching on the weekend.
the "honeymoon period" is over, for better or for worse. we used that to describe the first few days here where there were no classes, and we only had to be up for orientation events. i'm probably glad it's over, because alcohol night after night (which goes along with lack of sleep) really gets to me. at orientation, the leaders made a point of "living well" while over here. they said to make sure to get your sleep, eat well, and not drink too much, among other things. i did exactly the opposite for the first 48-72 hours. but now, i think things are starting to fall into a routine. i haven't had much of a chance to explore the city yet, even though we took a bus tour all around london so we could see the signts. i have a tube pass (so i only have to pay 1 pound 50 pence for a ride instead of 4 pounds!), so i might just go out and explore someday when i have time. i'll be sure to send pictures, too.
a few other observations i've made:
- carlsberg is the best beer over here in my opinion. all the pubs have many different types, and it's the best i've had so far.
- i can't (and probably won't ever) get used to the left side of the road driving deal. i'm always confused as to which way to look when i'm crossing the street. some streets are one way, others are not, and none of them are signed as to what they are. i've almost been hit several times already, including by an ambulance (ironic, no?)
- grocery shopping and cooking in one's flat can really bring a group of guys together
- all the hamilton kids are sticking together, as are the wheaton and NYU students. there are a couple of exceptions to this rule, but it still holds very true.
i gotta run. hopefully i have internet tonight (and hot water!!)?
