The universe is not required to be in perfect harmony with human ambition.
-Carl Sagan
It wasn’t fair. It was completely and utterly unfair, in fact.
Bret wanted an apple.
The fruit vendor was all out, somehow. He didn’t know how, but he was. Even the fruit vendor was surprised by this. (“We had a big rush for apples just before lunch… First time that’s ever happened.”)
Of course, the fruit vendor promised Bret a free apple next time, but that didn’t help Bret now. He’d gotten up and immediately thought about having an apple. He was so excited about it, that he didn’t even wait for Jemaine in case he wanted a banana.
But it hadn’t mattered. There weren’t any apples. None. And Bret couldn’t help pouting a little.
After a bit of sulking, the fruit vendor finally couldn’t take it any more, and told Bret to go to the supermarket, or some other place that sold apples. Bret had no choice but to agree, the fruit vendor seemed rather annoyed that he was just standing there.
So he went to the nearest fresh fruit store and found his apples: red delicious. They were the most delicious looking red deliciouses he’d ever seen. Happily, he picked out two, put them in a plastic bag, and went to the counter. They were rung up, and the person behind the counter told him three dollars and fifteen cents. He looked in his wallet and found he only had one dollar and fifty-five cents, for that was how much the fruit vendor charged them for apples and he hadn’t expected to be looking elsewhere for apples.
Sighing, he shuffled out of the shop and headed back home, hands in his pockets and kicking at the ground. All he’d wanted was an apple…
