'Downton Abbey', Episode 5

Nov 23, 2010 23:16

- Daisy starts to crack over what she saw. How long before she tells, or is forced to tell?

- Sybil: "Poor Aunt Rosamund all alone in that big house. I feel so sorry for her."
Mary: "I don't! All alone with plenty of money and a house in Eaton Square. I can't imagine anything better."
Robert: (slamming the letter shut, sternly) "Really Mary, I wish you wouldn't talk like that. There will come a day when someone thinks you mean what you say."
Mary: "It can't come soon enough..."
(Exasperated, Robert leaves the three girls at the breakfast table.)

Sybil continues in her quest to find Gwen the job she wants. ♥ :D

- Isobel: "I thought I'd write to Edith to settle our promised church visit."
Matthew: "If you want."
Isobel: "Well we can't just throw her over when she made such an effort to arrange the last one."
Matthew: "It's all in your head."
Isobel: "I don't think so."
Matthew: "Then she's barking up the wrong tree."
Isobel: "Poor Edith. I hope there's a right tree for her somewhere."

That's why those bottles of wine were disappearing; Thomas has been nicking them, and looks like Bates has caught him in the act but will he say anything to Carson?

Love these two too. :D

- Oh O'Brien leave William alone.

Anna: "Have you recovered Daisy?"
Bates: "What from?"
Anna: "She had a bit of a turn when we were in Lady Mary's room. Didn't you?"
Daisy: "I'm fine thank you."
Thomas: "What sort of a turn? Did you see a ghost?"
William: "Will you leave her alone if she doesn't want to talk about it?"
Thomas: "I've often wondered if this place is haunted. It ought to be."
O'Brien: "Are there spirits of maids and footmen who died in slavery?"
Bates: (sarcastically) "But not in Thomas's case of overwork..."
(Thomas glares at him across the table.)

- Is O'Brien going to intimidate Daisy into confessing?

- I have a feeling Violet didn't exactly 'win' that cup... ;)

- OMG what exactly did Thomas put in that letter? :O

- Thomas: (about the letter) "You won't tell will ya? I'm in enough trouble as it is."
O'Brien: "Why what's happened?"
Thomas: "Mr Bates saw me nicking a bottle of wine."
O'Brien: "Has he told Mr Carson?"
Thomas: "Not yet but he will when he's feeling spiteful. I wish we could be shot of him."
O'Brien: "Then think of something quick. Turn the tables on him before he has a chance to nail you."

- What are these two up to now? >:(

Leave poor Daisy alone you two.

Gwen feigns an illness and heads off for another interview with Sybil.

- <3 at Gwen's comment about Anna being like a sister to her. :D

Bates: (on Edith having feelings for Mary's dead fiance) "It's sad to think about."
Anna: "It's always sad, to love someone who doesn't love you back, no matter who you are."
(She looks up at Bates.)
Bates: (looking a little taken aback) "No, I mean it's sad that he died."
Anna: (realising) "Oh...yes. Very sad. He was nice." (She starts collecting the old bed linens) "Well, thank you for that. Much appreciated."
Bates: "My pleasure. Perhaps, Mr Patrick did love her back he just couldn't say."
Anna: "Why ever not?"
Bates: "Sometimes we are not at liberty to speak, sometimes it wouldn't be right."
(He leaves the room and Anna looks contemplative)

- Hmmmmmmmm big hints there! :D No wonder these two always seem to be popping up where the other one is since she was the only person apart from Robert who was nice to him during his trial run as valet. ♥

- LMAO Gwen don't sit so rigidly. XD

- Three guesses as to who stole the box...

Violet and Isobel at war again. :P

Gwen: "Come on Dragon, come on!"
Sybil: (to the horse) "Dragon, if you don't move now I will have you boiled for glue!"
(The horse suddenly bolts with the cart, knocking Gwen and Sybil into the mud.)

- And O'Brien has started again...

- Mary: (after O'Brien has left) "What did she want?"
Edith: "Nothing, just a message from Mama to say that Sybil had turned up alive."
Mary: "Poor darling. She had to walk for miles. I don't think I'd have got down however lame the horse."
Edith: "No, I don't believe you would."

Daisy's forced into a confession thanks to O'Brien.

- Violet: (during the arrangements for the flower show) "My dear, Mrs Crawley believes I am profiting from an unfair advantage."
Cora: "Oh?"
Violet: "Hmm. She feels in the past I've been given the cup merely as a matter of routine rather than merit."
Matthew: "That's rather ungallant, Mother. I'm sure when we see cousin Violet's roses, it'll be hard to think they could be bettered."
(Violet smiles at him.)
Isobel: (smiling) "Hard but not impossible."
(Cora smiles, embarrassed.)
Violet: (her smile fading quickly) "You are quite wonderful in the way you see room for improvement wherever you look. I never knew such reforming scenery."
Isobel: (grinning) "I take that as a compliment."
(She turns away from the group.)
Violet: "I must have said it wrong!"
(She chuckles and leaves, Mary, Matthew and Cora looking embarrassed.)
Mary: (to Matthew) "Poor Granny; she's not used to being challenged."

- I seriously doubt Bates stole that box but he does look a wee bit guilty...

(Servants' kitchen)
O'Brien: "I am sorry Mr Bates. What an unpleasant thing to have happened."
Anna: "Why are you picking on him?"
Thomas: "Because he's the only one of us that goes in there. Don't worry, I'm sure it'll turn up..."
Bates: "Thank you for your concern..."
(The dinner gong sounds overhead and everyone except Anna and Bates leave the table.)
Bates: "I hate this kind of thing. I hope to God they find it. Better get a move on."
(He gets up and leaves a worried looking Anna.)

- (Mary's room)
Cora: "If it gets around and you're not already married, every door in London will be slammed in your face."
Mary: "Mama the world is changing."
Cora: "Not that much, and not fast enough for you."
Mary: "I know you mean to help and I know you love me, but I also know what I'm capable of and forty years of boredom and duties just isn't possible for me. I'm sorry."
Cora: "I do love you and I want to help."
Mary: "I'm a lost cause Mama! Leave me to manage my own affairs. Why not concentrate on Edith? She needs all the help she can get."
(Edith's reflection at the door can be seen in the glass of a wall picture.)
Cora: "You mustn't be unkind to Edith; she has fewer advantages than you."
Mary: "Fewer? She has none at all."
(Edith slips away quietly down the corridor looking hurt.)

Poor Edith, she really gets the raw deal at the end of it all doesn't she? :(

- Aaaaaw they're not going to serve that chicken after it fell on the floor and the cat clamped its mouth round it? D: D: D: Uuuuuuuuuugh.

- Mrs Patmore may be going blind but that's no excuse to blame Daisy constantly. :/

(Servant's corridor)
Anna: "I think I know where that snuff box is."
Bates: "Where?"
Anna: "Hidden in your room."
Bates: "You don't think-?"
Anna: "'Course I don't, you silly beggar."
Bates: "Then..."
Anna: "I bet Thomas would like it if they took you for a thief."
Bates: "Yes I expect he would."
Anna: "Go upstairs now and find it, and when you have, you can choose whether to put it in Thomas's room or give it to me and I'll slip it into Miss O'Brien's."
Bates: "You naughty girl."
Anna: (grinning) "Fight fire with fire. That's what my mum says."

- Mary leave Edith alone. :(

- Aaaaaaw both Matthew and Edith have been stiffed by Mary.

- Robert: "Mary can be such a child."
Cora: "What do you mean darling?"
Robert: "She thinks if you put a toy down it'll still be sitting there when you want to play with it again."

- I don't know what to make of Mary as she seems sincere most of the time and then does a complete turn and goes back to being a bitch. It depends though on how much of that is due to her situation. Hmmm.

(Servants' kitchen)
Anna: "Mr Carson we were wondering about that snuffbox. Has it turned up yet?"
Carson: "I'm afraid not."
Bates: "Well I think we should have a search."
(Thomas and O'Brien both look up at him nervously.)
Thomas: "What...?"
Bates: (giving Thomas a knowing look) "Doesn't do to leave these things too long."
Anna: "Mr Carson can search the men's rooms, Mrs Hughes the women's and it should be right away now that we've talked of it so no one has a chance to hide the box. Don't you agree Mr Carson?"
Carson: "Perhaps it's for the best, although I'm sure I won't find anything. I'll fetch Mrs Hughes."
(He leaves. O'Brien and Thomas start to rise from their chairs.)
Thomas: "I think I'll just um..."
O'Brien: "I'll just check it's tidy..."
(They very quickly exit the kitchen and rush upstairs. Anna and Bates share a knowing look.)

- Mrs Hughes: (on finding a flustered O'Brien in her room with everything flung all over the place) "My my, you have been busy..."

Anna: (walking to the village with O'Brien and Thomas in front of her and Bates) "You should have punished one of them at least."
Bates: "They know that I know and that's worth something."
Anna: "What do you think'll happen to Mrs Patmore?"
Bates: "Oh she'll muddle through with Daisy for help. In the longterm, we'll just have to wait for the doctor to give his opinion."
Anna: "I hope there's something they can do."
Bates: "I hope so too, but if there isn't I hope they tell her there isn't. Nothing is harder to live with than false hope."
Anna: (stopping suddenly) "I wish you'd just come out with it."
Bates: "With what?"
Anna: "With whatever it is; you're keeping secrets."
Bates: (lowering his voice) "I can't."
Anna: "You don't deny it then?"
Bates: "No I don't deny it, and I don't deny you've a right to ask but I can't. I'm not a free man."
Anna: "Are you trying to tell me that you're married?"
Bates: "I have been married yes, but that's not all of it."
Anna: "Because...because I love you, Mr Bates. I know it's not ladylike to say it but I'm not a lady and I don't pretend to be."
Bates: "You are a lady to me, and I never knew a finer one."
*SQUUUUEEEEEEEEEEEE* :DDDD

- Poor Gwen didn't get the position then. :(

- Well done Violet for 'giving' that cup to someone else for a change. ;)

Oh Edith, what are you doing? :O :O :O
