'Downton Abbey', Episode 4

Nov 22, 2010 00:13

With the fair coming to Ripon, the servants are hopeful that they will be able to attend. Anna checks up on Mary after the incident with Pamuk: she seems fine but isn't convinced that her mother will get over it quite so quickly... Robert hires a new chaffeur, Irishman Tom Branson and is rather amused by his political ideas. Violet and Cora discuss Mary's future engagements and Violet later pays a visit to Matthew to further discuss the endowment. Isobel has noticed butler Moseley has suffered a bad reaction and drags him along to Dr Clarkson.

- Robert: "He seems a bright spark after poor old Taylor, and to think Taylor has gone off to run a tea shop. I cannot feel it will make for a very restful retirement. Can you?"
Carson: "I would rather be put to death m'lord."
(Robert looks rather bemused)

Violet: "If she didn't know him, one can't go to pieces at the death of every foreigner. We'd all be in a state of collapse whenever we opened a newspaper."

Violet: (after nearly falling off her chair) "Good heavens, what am I sitting on?"
Matthew: "Er, a swivell chair."
Violet: "Oh, another modern brainwave?"
Matthew: "Not very modern, they were invented by Thomas Jefferson."
Violet: "Why does every day involve a fight with an American?"
Oh Violet, never change! XD

Being fond of Daisy, William asks Bates whether he should ask her to come with him to the fair; Bates agrees knowing that this would cheer her up but Thomas quickly jumps in and asks her himself, knowing that she has a crush on him, annoying both Bates and William by doing so.

William: "Is Daisy going to the fair tonight with the others?"
Bates: "Why don't you ask her? She needs taking out of herself."
(He sees Thomas listening in across the table)
Bates: "What's it to you?"
Thomas: "Nothing."
(Daisy comes in)
William: "Daisy, I was hoping you-"
Thomas: (cutting across him) "Would you like to go to the fair with me Daisy? There's a few of us going later on."
Daisy: "Do you mean it?"
Thomas: "'Course I do."
Mrs Patmore: (off screen) "Daisy don't let it get cold!"
(Daisy grins and leaves. William follows looking defeated)
Bates: (at Thomas) "You bastard."

- Oh Daisy, wake up and stop going all soppy over Thomas. *facepalm*

- I love the scenes between Matthew and Robert. :D <3

Matthew pays a visit to speak with Robert regarding his discussion with Violet earlier. Mrs Hughes meets up with a former flame at the village fair who has a certain question to ask her but later says that he would rather wait a week for the right answer than get a wrong answer too quickly. Robert and Matthew's private discussion is quickly brought to a halt after Carson accidently lets slip to Violet that Robert isn't alone in the library after dinner that evening. Realising that Anna hasn't made an appearance at dinner after having been sent up to bed with a cold, Bates takes her up a tray of food, repaying the favour after she brought him food up when they thought he was going to be let go from Downton.

- O'Brien: "You shouldn't have eaten with us. The chauffeur always eats in his own cottage."
Bates: "Steady on. You can cut him a bit of slack on his second day."
Branson: "I'm waiting to take old lady Grantham home."
O'Brien: "Even then old Taylor never ate with us. You're taking advantage of Mrs Hughes's absence."
Branson: (to Bates) "What are you doing?"
Bates: "I'm sewing collars and removing the ones that have come to an end."
Branson: "What happens to his Lordship's old clothes?"
O'Brien: "What's it to you? Clothes are a valet's perk, not yours."
Bates: "I get some but most of it goes into the missionary barrel."
Branson: "I know it's meant to be kind, but I can think of better ways to help the needy than sending stiff collars to the Equator."
(Bates smirks)
Bates: "I thought Anna might have come down for her dinner."
O'Brien: "And show she's ready to start work again? Not a chance."
Bates: "She still in bed then?"
O'Brien: "She is, while I'm sat here sewing like a cursed princess in a fairytale and not down at the fair with the others."
That woman's as miserable as sin FFS...

- Matthew: "The question is what do I say to cousin Violet?"
Robert: (not hearing his mother come in) "Oh don't worry about that. I can handle her."
Violet: "Really? When if you can you must have learned to very recently."

- Anna doesn't look well at all. :(

- Alajfdlasgslka Bates brought her dinner to her! :DDDD

Anna: "I don't know what to-"
Bates: (looking behind him that no one else is around and hands her the tray) "Shhh..."
D'aaaaaaaaaaaaw. :D ♥♥♥

- Thomas stop sniping. >:( *slaps*

- Aaaaw will 'Mrs' Hughes say yes?

Looks like Mary is starting to fall for Matthew...

Matthew: "It's very difficult Carson, for her, for Mary, for all of us."
Carson: "It is Mr Crawley, but I appreciate your saying so."

Mrs Hughes and her suitor are causing speculation between Thomas, O'Brien and Daisy. Picking up on William's bad mood when he returns from the fair that evening, Bates goes to check on him but William insists he's okay. Finding Thomas sauntering up the corridor behind him, Bates grabs him and warns him to leave William alone in future.

Thomas: (about Mrs Hughes) "I was right when I said she was looking all sparkly-eyed."
(Daisy sniggers)
Carson: (coming out of a side passage behind) "I beg your pardon Thomas..."
(he leaves)
Thomas: "He can disapprove all he likes. Mrs Hughes has got a fancy man."
Daisy: (smirking) "Him? A fancy man?"
Bates: (disapproving, heading past to lock up) "Don't be so nasty Daisy. It doesn't suit you."
Thomas: "I reckon there's a job vacancy coming up. Miss O'Brien, d'ya fancy a promotion?"
O'Brien: "Uh! Very droll. If she's got a boyfriend, I'm a giraffe."

(Bates knocks on William's door)
William: "Leave me alone, Mr Bates. I know you mean well but let me be."
(Bates closes the door and turns to find Thomas in the corrider behind)
Thomas: (smirking) "What chance did he have, up against a champion?"
(Bates has had enough, grabs Thomas by his waistcoast and slams him against the wall)
Bates: "Now you listen, you filthy little rat. If you don't lay off, I will punch your shining teeth through the back of your skull."
Thomas: (smirking) "Is this supposed to frighten me, Mr Bates, because if it is, it isn't working. I'm sorry but it's just not working."
(Bates releases him and Thomas swaggers off)
GO BATES! :D

Sybil and Gwen plan to have Gwen take a day off 'sick' in order that she can attend an interview for a secretarial position. Sybil discovers that Branson is political and agrees with women's rights, something she is also very keen on. Moseley and Isobel make a return trip to Dr Clarkson; the solution he has been taking doesn't seem to be having any effect.

- (Gwen enters Sybil's room. O'Brien is doing Sybil's hair)
O'Brien: "What do you want."
Gwen: "I've got a message for Lady Sybil. From her Ladyship."
Sybil: "Thank you O'Brien. I'll manage now."
(O'Brien leaves looking sour. Gwen shuts the door as she leaves.)
Sybil: "Odious woman."

Pretty shots. <3 :D

- Matthew: "You must have thought me an awful prig when I first arrived."
Robert: "Not a prig, just a man thrust into something he never wanted or envisaged."

- Aww Daisy wake up, Thomas is only using you! *facepalm* Looks like Mrs Patmore can't get through to her either. XD

Mary begins to feel the pressure after hearing her father constantly praising Matthew. Gwen breaks the disappointing news to Sybil that her interview has been cancelled. Mrs Hughes turns down her suitor's offer of marriage, realising that her true place is at Downton and that she has changed after all these years after William wonders aloud what they would all do without her.

Mary: "I wish you'd just admit it, I'm a lost cause to you!"

- Cora: "Don't quarrel with Matthew."
Mary: "Why shouldn't I?!"
Cora: "Because one day you may need him."

Mrs Hughes: "In many ways I wanted to accept, but I'm not that farmgirl anymore. I was flattered of course, but I've changed."
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaw.

Sybil's new 'dress' (a pair of harem pants) stuns all of her family and amuses Branson but also appears a bit too modern for some! ;)
