We are doing STDs, and we'll be sending those out in May/June. However, about 160 of the 200 people getting invites will have to travel at least 1,000 miles, which means taking time off of work for travel and the travel time itself. We wanted to give folks PLENTY of notice, especially since almost all of them will definitely want to come. The way we figure it, the STD will serve to let people know "Hey, you've got to get plane tickets!" and then the invite will serve to say "Hey, if you haven't gotten tickets already, you'll probably really want to start thinking about it!"
The round of STDs will also give us a chance to make sure all our addresses are correct.
We went to a wedding last year where the start time listed was an hour earlier than the actual start time so we were VERY early. It was boring for sure but I understood that someone being a little bored was more important that people showing up late.
It was also recommended to me by officiants to never put the actual start time on an invite because people come late so often.
::shrug:: Every wedding I've ever been to/in has had the actual ceremony start half an hour to 45 minutes after what it says on the invitation. For the most part people who were there early or on time used the chance to talk to family or friends that they hadn't seen in a while. People don't actually have to sit in their seats and be stoic for an hour.
I'd rather have people irritated with me because they had to schmooze with family and friends for a little longer than be livid with guests trying to sneak in after the ceremony has started. But that's just me, I guess.
