i was thinking earlier about the magical Christmas trees & lights of Castleton in Derbyshire. People came from miles around to see this beautiful village whose main street every year had lit Christmas trees outside every shop it seemed. Living in Matlock we would go every year & it was utterly magical. There was almost always snow & slush with the light adding to the Christmas atmosphere & shop windows were done up beautifully. I remember white fairy lights on Windows with small panes of glass, stunning displays of the rare & beautiful mineral Blue John, Christmas trees, the snow, the cold, the magic, visiting a Santa grotto in what appeared to be a Dutch barn near the car park (I remember the inside quite clearly) & also remember my aunt with us who sat on Santa's knee much to his shock lol
I remember such magic, real Christmas magic. As a child from around 7-13 we went every year that we lived in Derbyshire. I often think of it & we recall it as a family too. When I looked up modern photos it was like I was there again. I know I will never see it again, & I know that much of the magic was because I was a child who appreciated beauty & sweet innocent magic. I know that continuously having to now check for wheelchair access would destroy much of that innocent magic that I so loved.
I wish I could travel back in time again to see it once more.
The History of CastletonAbout CastletonHow lovely to see Mam Tor again, the Shivering Mountain & to hear of Winnets Pass again. Even though I've just misspelt it lol
